4 1/2 yo boy - things to keep him occupied on trip

We're going to be away for almost a week. We'll be spending a lot of time traveling as well. I want to get DS some items for the trip that will be new to him and keep him occupied. Any ideas? I wish coloring books were a good option, but he has some fine motor issues that make coloring more like work. So although I will expect him to do some coloring, I also want to offer some more fun items. Thanks!

My boys love cars/trucks/planes/trains -
It doesn't matter how many they have, they are ALWAYS excited about a new one and they keep them occupied forever ......

Do you have an iPad? That thing is a lifesaver - movies, games, books everything and anything can be downloaded or accessed on it.

Does he like music? I made playlist for my older son on my phone and he thought it was the coolest thing ever .......

my son's go to item are playskool transformers - he loves transforming them and playing games with them - the ones that transform are not too big and they make no noise them self - he has them all and loves them all - I give them to him one at a time because it takes him a few tries to get it right

he loves optimus prime, bumblebee, chase, and hoist probably best but that changes day to day - but I always have on in the car and one in my purse

Thanks for the responses so far! I'll definitely be bringing the ipad. Maybe we can get some new apps. And DS is also in the midst of a slow recovery from an obsession with Transformers Rescue Bots lol. But they're pretty big. I can look for these smaller ones. Where do you get them?

We just went on bacation and i bought a preschool workbook, some new DVDs and apps and pulled a few toys out from hiding. My ds also has fine motor issues but the workbook was fun because he likes anything educational. He really liked Elmo's travel songs and games DVD and we did a lot of the games while driving. I also bought him the app crayon stylus which is great on working on fine motor skills. He asked for the letter school game now.
