When you open presents ...
that you get for your DD or DS and then having a party, do you open the presents you got your child before the party in private or do you open with the the other gifts that people give him or her at the party with the attendees present? Our daughter's first birthday is two days before her party and not sure if more appropriate to open our gifts to her beforehand.

At a first birthday I would open them in private. If the child is a little older and wants to open them in front of their friends, then I would do it at the party.

At that age, I'm not sure it matters. Your dd won't really understand anyway.

At home. When they are that young they don't understand they have to move onto the next present and instead start to lose it because they want to open & play with what they just opened.

DS is only two and doesn't care about opening gifts but we would give our gifts on the actual birthday. If the actual birthday and the party were the same day then I'm not sure. It would depend on what the gifts were.

We don't open presents in front of friends, only immediate family after the party is over. I don't want pieces to get lost, people to feel badly, and I want to keep a list to write thank you notes. At one, your DD will likely not understand who a present is from or even why she is receiving it. That will happen at 2 or even 3. She might get excited over a particular toy, but understanding that it is from someone specific, I don't think comes until later.

My DD's 2nd party is next week and I don't plan on having her open gifts in front of everyone. I know she will get distracted with a toy she opens and won't want to open anything else. I will save everything for that night or the next morning like we did last year.

Growing up we always did our family gifts seperately, usually at birthday breakfast or dinner.
I have yet to open DC bday presents at a party to avoid confusion and not sure people really want to sit around watching gifts being opened.

I think you could do whichever. Especially at one year you could do it either way with no preference to LO. For us, we just gave it to her at her party for both her 1st & 2nd only because the party landed on the same day. I think in the future though when it doesn't fall on her party we'll most likely do our own gifts private on her actual day. In my family we always wanted to make the actual birthday special despite when the party is so we usually did it that way.

If you have other kids at the party I would suggest you open presents in private. We went to a birthday party where the guest opened gifts in front of everyone. It made all the other kids cried because one person was getting all the gifts and everyone else's kid had to sit and watch. Sometimes you can't reason with toddlers. They see a toy. They want it.

Your daughter has no idea whats going on. I did my twins birthday presents myself. They are just going to get overwhelmed.

we did our gift separate.
for the first birthday we had people put gifts in the hall and didnt open them up til the next morning, which was nice ds being able to leisurely open- since 1 year olds dont understand time.
