First off, I'm still not even sure if I had an episiotomy or just a tear. It didn't get infected but I had a bad flare up of group b strep that required two rounds of antibiotics to finally kick. I also developed a polyp along the stitches and eventually had to have that removed. Neither was too bad, it just took a long time to get it all sorted out.

I would definitely get it checked out right away if you think something is wrong. How long ago did you deliver?

Re: Episiotomy Girls

Mine wasn't infected, but several stitches never melted away. When I went for my 6 wk appointment, my OB was amazed that I was tolerating the discomfort. I just assumed it was normal!

She fixed it on the spot and I felt better the next day.

Knowing my level of pain, I'm afraid to think of how horrible an infection could be. Good luck!

Like pp, the only discomfort I felt was from a line stitch or two that never dissolved. Once he removed them, I felt much better. I'm scared to think of what an infection might feel like Chat Icon

Dunno about it being infected, but it wasn't healing and was still "open" by my 6wk PP visit. Dr applied silver nitrate and it did burn a lot, but began healing immediately finally.

Hi, I had an episiotomy and by 6 weeks I knew something was wrong because its was still very painful... I went back to my doc and he said the episiotomy actually over healed and created "granulated tissue"... so what I had to do is dab the area each time I went to the bathroom with peroxide on cotton, it went away shortly after... if it didn't heal then my ob mentioned we would have to cauterize it with silver nitrate. hope this helps!!

I went to Dr at 5 weeks and it was still sore. OB said it wasn't healed but to com back in two weeks and if it wasn't better she would use silver nitrate. On week later it go really sore so I figured I would ask for the silver nitrate a week early. Turns out it had gotten infected ( swollen and warm to the touch). Sh also said there was some granular tissue. So now I'm on antibiotics and go back next week.

I had a similar issue. Not an infection, but they said it had healed "raw", I think? I forget the phrase. Everything was ok at my 6 week checkup. About 2 or 3 weeks later I was in incredible pain and took a mirror and looked down there and I had a couple of hard red bumps that really burned to the touch. They had to cauterize it with silver nitrate, and it was all healed the next day.

I can't believe you went to the OB and *asked* for the silver nitrate - to me, that hurt even more than giving birth! It was pretty excruciating. I hope you don't end up needing it. Chat Icon
