Q for those who work 3-4 days!

Would you give up a good portion of your 401k contribution to work one less day? I currently work 4 days and am debating cutting another day. The guy I work for the most is retiring and his replacement and I are not meshing and my days will be much more difficult now.

The one day less of childcare will not recoup the lost earning much so I would need to slash my 401k deduction by a good amount.

If you currently work I am wondering what you would do? We don't spend lavishly but are used to not worrying about stuff breaking, etc. Having less in my retirement account and in my monthly check does bother me a lot.

I sometimes think its crazy to give up so much for one day but I am torn. My life at work would also be more difficult even though I would have less clients at 3 days.

I can't try it and go back to 4 days as I would be giving my clients to other people and taking them back would be awkward and not right!!!

Am I the only one who struggles with the decision to go more PT??

My DH would like me to stay at 4 days and is very against me not maxing the 401k but he told me to do what I want.

I work 3 days/week. I left my 401k at 10% of my salary so I'm still putting in less, but it's not too bad. If you're maxing out at 15%, can you just reduce it to 10%?

How do you like 3 days? Forgot to add that my 4th day is at home so I would be giving up salary and 401k and lose the day at home. So hard to decide!

I would prob have to do a lot less than 10% which is why I am so hesitant!!

I went p/t to 3 days and it has made a huge difference in my life. But the priority for me and DH was for me to spend more time with the kids while they were little (as long as we could swing the bills on my reduced salary). My retirement took a hit (my contrib. and company match), but I also have a pension in addition to the 401k.

If it is something you really want, then you need to talk it out with DH (since your DH is against it). You don’t want it to cause resentment down the line, esp. since you can’t go back once you cut your time.

I know, such a tough decision. I am just really afraid of not living comfortably and I am a worry wort about finances. Maybe I should feel out HR first.
