Please help - recurring fever in 2 yr old

DS will be 2 in a week and a half.

My mom passed away a little over a month ago- so things have been crazy.

My youngest DS has had 4 fevers since mid-may. One lasted 7 days. It went away for 5 days and came back yesterday. They aren't high- about 101 or 102 and respond to advil immediately. NO OTHER symptoms. Last week he had a red blotchiness around his eyes- racoonish rash.

We started bloodwork last week but they had SUCH a hard time getting it that we stopped. When the fever came back we went to Huntington hospital and they FINALLY got enough to do a CBC - they may have gotten enough to do a Lyme test.

Ped is trying to get us in to an infectious disease specialist this week. CBC came back not too high so he thinks we can rule out leukemia (thank you God)- he thinks it is some crazy virus or could maybe be autoimmune?

Just looking to see if someone has had any experience with something like this? Chat Icon

ETA: does anyone know how the blood technicians in a Ped infectious disease specialist might be- it was tortuous trying to get blood from him.

Re: Please help - recurring fever in 2 yr old

My son has been having rebound fevers for the last few weeks... Started in April with some viral infection 103-104 for 4 days... Ended with a trip to the ER...

Last week he started again with 101-101.8 for a day. Then low grade for another day. He also had HUGE bug bites on him... We are starting to think he is really allergic to bug bites. I get fevers after I get stung by bee's.. DS has food and environmental allergies so it is definitely a possibility with him. I am going to call his allergist this week. I know when he got bit by weird looking mosquito's last year, his face blew up instantly! He has had blood work done and nothing has come up in it...

we went through something like this with my twins from nov to feb - they would go4 or 5 days with a 101-102 fever, sometimes a spike of 103 or 104 - responded well to advil - then the fever go away for a few days

we tested for flu multiple times -sis the blood work urine testing - nothing came up - we just had to wait it out - my boys were 15 months till 18 months

Have you had your ds' urine checked for a uti? It's a very common cause of unexplained fevers or fevers without any other symptoms.

I was going to ask the same things because my DD started getting frequent fevers at the age of two. She got sick almost every month. We kept assuming she was catching viruses from preschool. Turned out she was getting frequent UTIs. (this was discovered after a bunch of others tests: xrays, bloodwork, cardiologist, etc..)
Long story short, my DD had vesicoureteral reflux due to a congenital defect.

DS had this too. Once in April, one two weeks ago, and then one that started last Monday and ended Friday. Same high fevers and nothing else, the ped said it was viruses. They did a urinalysis this past time and it came back fine. This last virus turned out to be Roseola.

ETA he's 23 months.

Yes, urinalysis came back clear- we saw Dr. Lee today at winthrop.

Could be lymes or a random virus- have to wait for blood test results. He said do more blood work if there is still fever on wed.

When my DS was four, he had a fever the entire month of February. It started out as Roseola and we left for Disney with a 99.something fever - he seemed ok. At Disney, his fever spiked to 105 - we saw the doctor and he said bronchitis (totally think it was not that) and he gave him some antibiotics that brought the fever down to about 100. Came home after one week and then the fever spiked again - we saw our own ped and now it was a double ear infection, with one so bad it almost burst (dr in FL said his ears were fine). More meds and the fever lowered but wasn't gone until about 7-10 days later. Sometimes it just happens and it's one thing after another. Hope your DS feels better soon.
