when did it kick in for your child? DD just turned 5 months and already shows preference! I don't remember it happening so early with my son

My first son - it didn't kick in until he was close to 2. We were flying when he was 17 months and he sat for part of the flight a few rows back on this man's lap (hey, it kept him quiet).
For DS 2 - it kicked in a lot earlier - maybe around 5-6 months. It was pointed out to me between 10-13 months at daycare (he used to get really upset when someone he didn't recognize entered the room) but, he's gotten a little better.
ETA - He used to give people the stink eye if he didn't know them well.

For dd prob 5 or 6 months and still going strong at 2.5
For ds never he would probably go home with anyone that smiled at him!
