Nanny Compensation Question

We are hiring a full time Nanny to take care of our DD while we are at work. We have already agreed on an hourly rate with her. Now I am wondering what people with full time nannies do in terms of vacation and sick days. Do you give any paid vacation or sick time or do you keep it to strictly an hourly schedule? What about holidays where you are off from work and therefore don't need your Nanny (e.g., Labor Day)? Thanks!

You need to work that out with your nanny - see what her expectations are. Our arrangement is that if she asks off we don't pay her, but if we don't need her we have to pay her (including holidays). Our nanny very rarely asks for time off, so when she does we just pay her. Everyone has a different arrangement, but I suggest talking about it in advance.

That's definitely something to agree on (preferably in writing) before she begins just so it doesn't get uncomfortable later. Whatever you (and she) are comfortable with really.

For me, I babysit a 1 yr old 3X a week and I charge by day/week rather than hours. It's set up so that if he's scheduled to come and doesn't (for whatever reason) then I still charge for that day. If I have to cancel on her (like DD is sick or whatever) then I don't charge. I actually also do not charge for holidays or vacations (as long as they give me 2 wks notice) even though I know a lot of people are very generous and do give their babysitters/nannies paid holiday/vacation time. That would be a nice thing to do if you can afford it. You could also just pick & choose specific holidays if you wanted to do some but not all (like maybe just the major ones?). There's really no rules. Definitely something to be discussed though in exact detail so you all know what to expect in the first year.

I am in the midst of interviewing nannies and from what I understand, most nannies get paid for two weeks vacation. They usually get paid for one vacation week of their choice and for another vacation of your choice (since they don't want to loose out on getting paid while the family is
away.)

I have had nannies tell me that they get compensated for 3-5 days sick days and for travel expenses as well.

We haven't hired anyone yet but I am finally realizing how expensive a nanny could be!

We just hired someone too. one nanny had a ridiculous list of requests... contribution to her roth IRA, vacation/sick days, $20 hr, birthday pay, anniversary pay, paid summers (we're both teachers), contribution to 1/2 her medical.... needless to say we're not paying any of that! try the hamptons :)

we did hire someone and paying $15 hr or 2 kids. no vacation/sick & summers unpaid. I think those requests for an offthe book job is ludicrous!

When we had one this is what we did. She had off all holidays that we had off. She had 3 weeks of vacation time. Two weeks were our discretion and one week was her discretion. Sick time was as needed and she never took advantage of that.

Our nanny gets 2 weeks paid vacation (Christmas week and a week in the summer when we go away). She is paid weekly based on a daily rate. Sick days are not specified, but she has never taken an excessive amount. I'm a teacher, so she gets plenty of time off, modified hours, etc ... so we have a good give and take and neither takes advantage of the other.

For those who give their nannies 2 weeks off - what do you about any additional time that you might take off and thus not need her to work over and above those 2 weeks? Do you pay her for it?

Man, some of these requests are a little crazy. We had a nanny for the last year and just recently went to day care. When we had the nanny, I paid $10/hr off the books and when she didn't work, she didn't get paid. I had no problems setting up that type of system b/c when I don't work, I don't get paid. I don't get sick/vacation time so why would I offer it to someone else. JMO.

We have a nanny 3x a week. She gets 2 "weeks" paid vacation (which comes out to 6 days since her work week is only 3 days). One week she can choose, the other week we choose. If a national holiday falls on one of her days, we pay her for it. She has never called out sick in 2.5 years, so we haven't had that issue, but would pay her for it. She has had to attend some funerals...clearly we pay her for those days. Basically...unless she wants MORE than her allotted 3 days off, she gets paid for every day.

We have a full time nanny and have a contract that includes the following:

$XX for 50 hour weeks, with OT rate for an hours over 50.

Dinner when working after 8pm and taxi fare home when working after 9pm

Monthly metrocard

2 weeks paid vacation - 5 days of her choosing, 5 days or our choosing

All market holidays are paid days off. This includes MLK, President's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's.

We do not have a specific sick policy in place. If she's sick, she can take off without penalty. However, if this becomes an issue, we'll re-address.

It's always different but what we did was give 3 weeks, paid, since that is how much vacation I had at the time. Two weeks would be of her choice ( but I needed a 2 months heads up and of couldn't conflict with my very busy season) and one week if our choice. All paid holidays were the same as ours. Sick days as needed but she never used any. Occasionally she took a day off here and there but would give me plenty of notice. We had this arrangement for 2 years and it worked out well . Good luck!

We pay our nanny for 3 weeks of vacation - 1 of those weeks she gets to pick and we will find alternative daycare. We also give her off any day we are off from work, which is a lot of holidays. She also gets 5 sick days but has never called in sick (god bless her).

My husband and I get 4 weeks of vacation so she will get more than 3 weeks + all holidays. We are just happy to have someone we trust and who DS loves.
