car seat / legality question

my husband is looking into new trucks. one of the ones he found is a pickup truck. I think it has a back seat but not 100% bc the ad doesn't have interior photos.

I'm assuming if there is a back seat a forward facing car seat would probably be fine...but what if there isn't??? that means my son could never ride in it until...is it 13 years of age? I know kids can not be in a front seat...so does that mean I would have to leave him with my car if i ever go out and leave him with the baby? that would SUCK!

Regardless of the legality, I wouldnt be comfy with my young child riding in the front of a pickup truck at all.

Legally, a child in a car seat, can be in the front of a pick up truck. They have a little key to turn off the air bags. DD has never been in DH's pick up truck BUT in case of an emergency - it is legal, and while I am not 100% comfortable with it, I do think it is safe.

thank you. I'm not comfortable with it at all either...but DS is hardly ever left alone with DH anyway bc DS is usually attached to my hip. So, I'm asking more in case of emergency. Even when he does have DS without me he rarely leaves the house except to go to IL's 5 mins away. Trying to convince him he needs to choose a more family friendly vehicle but he's a gear head and trying to tell him what he should and shouldn't buy when it comes to vehicles is like talking to a wall. I do think the truck has a back seat, he's still looking...hoping he gets a jeep instead.

Yes a child can ride in the front when it is a 2 seater car or truck.

Re: car seat / legality question

I have a Crew Cab pickup, which has a 2/3 back seat, sorta. It's fine for FF car seats, but way too small for RF seats, so I have had DS in my truck when he was an infant in the front seat of my truck. Not very often, but there were a couple of times where we needed to. The air bag does turn off with the key.
Also, pickups are inherently bigger vehicles than cars, so there is some built-in safety by being in the truck vs a tiny sedan

Well listen to this. . . .we fought so much about it - he ended up with a Jeep. . . during the hurricane he parked it in a "safe spot" and it got flooded to the roof. . . so I lost the second car battle and now he has the pick up LOL!

oh man!!! that sucks! after reading some of the comments here i feel a little better about it. It wouldn't be a normal occurrence anyway...and a pickup could REALLY come in handy for all the DIY projects we need to pick up materials for.

Maybe you can just find one with a crew cab? There have been times that I had to use our other car for several days because my SUV is in the shop etc.

Re: car seat / legality question

If there is no back seat, it is legal to place child in a car seat in the front. Doesn't seem entirely safe, but it is legal.

Re: car seat / legality question

My husband's dream car was a pickup truck. So I surprised him 2 years ago for fathers/day birthday and bought him one. I made it a point to get the crew cab with the extra room in the back seat. He has a Ram and there is more room in the back seat than the backseat of my CRV. My DD's car seat was both rearfacing and forward facing and there was plenty of room. I love his truck. I would tell your DH if he needs a pickup then you insist he get the larger cab. (Crew... they also come with a quad cab which is smaller and I thought too small for the car seats).
