moms that sucessfully did CIO...
how did you do it?!?!? Dd is 4 months and we did our first attempt last night...i cant do it again. DH asked if we should try again tonight but i really dont think i can. any words of encouragement? i think shes just too young and want to try again in 2-4 weeks
heres what happened... first wake up was at 2:30am... dh waited 3 minutes went in told her it was bedtime etc, left the room and before the 5 minutes was up she was quiet and we thought wow that was easy! that only last a few minutes, by around 2:45 she was up again so he went in 3 minutes, 5 minutes, 7 minutes...she wasnt showing much signs of soothing herself at this point so i told him enough....but he waited out the 9 minutes we went in and gave her the pacifier but that didnt help her she was so worked up we picked her up and she was wide eyed and not wanting to go to sleep - she did stop crying though when we gave her the pacifier. we held her, rocked her etc and she just kept trying to calm down. after about 10 minutes i just nursed her which put her at ease and back to sleep.
i know she doesnt need a middle of the night feeding anymore (shes gone many times til 5-6am without eating) i just dont think its time for CIO
anyone have a similar experience? im leaning towards when she wakes up tonight just giving her the pacifier and letting her go right back to sleep - i was just hoping to break her of that. id like to wait another month before attempting this again...but i also want some sleep

edit: since it seems to be the consensus that 4months is too young, does anyone have any helpful tips on getting dd to sleep?? she hasnt taken a middle of the night feeding in about 2 weeks but wakes for a pacifier (we dont pick her up or even talk to her when we go in, literally just put in the pacifier and she goes back to sleep shortly). ill continue to do that for a while, but dont want her to get into the habit of needing it to go to sleep

moms that sucessfully did CIO...
my opinion...4 months is too young. the recommended age to start is 6 months. right now they still need the love, attention and food.

Re: moms that sucessfully did CIO...
we did it with my son around 6 months but it was due to waking incessantly for the pacifier.
DD will be 5 months tomorrow and I can't imagine doing it with her yet... she still wakes for a 230am bottle. I don't know why but I know she isn't ready.
I'd wait another month or two

Re: moms that sucessfully did CIO...
4 months might be a early to start. I tried it when DD was close to 6 months.
it could be a growth spurt

i know she doesnt need the food which is why i tried it. its been about 2 weeks that she doesnt take a feeding at 2am...just the pacifier. we dont even have to go in and pick her up or talk to her, just pop in the pacifier and shes sleeping again in a few minutes. if she was still taking a feeding i would have never tried it
after last night and hearing others successful experiences when they are older, im def going to wait a month or two....

Re: moms that sucessfully did CIO...
I did it at 4.5 months. He had already been sttn for weeks so the dr told me to do it. He wasn't a pacifier kid. He shared a room with his sister so I had the pa k n play set up in the guest room and I quickly moved him in there and told him it was time for night night. I laid on the couch and watched tv. First night was 10 min second night 2 min and then he stopped. I didn't go back in.

I did it at 4 months but the first night I was a mess. You have to be ready more than your DD.
I did not do the prgressive method. We jsut let him cry. It lasted about 15 minutes and he was asleep.
Since then he has slept petty good but we still have bad nights mostly after teething episodes. He will hae nights where he is up due to teething and I will not do CIO since I know he is up cause he is uncomfortable. That will usually then cause a bunch of nights where he gets up all the time. The first night of CIO after those spells is usually a rough one.
I am also dealign with night terrors and I will not do CIO then.
You really have to start to know your child and their cries. The cries that are "hey i'm awake and bored come play with me" are the ones we jsut let go. The cries that are "I'm in pain or scared" get attention.
You really do get to know the difference once you tune in.

i just responded on the other thread, but wanted to add since i just saw this post... im glad to you attempted it this early on - and that you were successful since most people feel it was too young to try. at least i know im not alone or a bad mom for trying so early!
i am pretty familiar with her cries which is the only reason i tried it...her 2-3am cries are just hey come in here and help me go back to sleep. they arent her hunger or hurt cries. but towards the end of last nights attempt they sure sounded like her hurting cries. i did actually try the non progressive way a few nights ago - but i only lasted 11 minutes and then went into her gave her the pacifier and she was out like a light. maybe it is more that im not ready and ill either need to let DH try it and go sleep at my moms or ill need to wait until i am ready

I really think it is us not being ready. I tried and gave up before I could commit. Its hard and def don't beat yourself up about it. Give yourself a week or so and try again.
My sis did it at 12 weeks successfully. She was ready and so was her DS...her DH was not and wanted to keep going in.
