Those with nannies...
Do you have a nannycam? We recently hired a babysitter through care.com for our 1 year old DS. She has been watching him with my grandmother at my parents house for the past 2 weeks. However, my grandmother wants to move in with her son, so starting next week, she will be watching him at my home by herself. She is only 20 years old and seems to be good with DS (according to my grandma). But, we have been wondering about getting a camera. I don't think its necessary, but DH is really for it. If we do, I would tell her about it...but I have a hard time thinking about how to tell her (partly because she is young, and at that age, I probably would have been offended). Can anyone share their experiences?

Those with nannies...
I do not have a nanny but back in college I knew a 20 year old babysitter. Based on the stuff she told me she did I would definitely get a nanny cam.

I am a nanny, and also a mother. I would have nanny cams if I had someone watching my children. You can never be too careful. If the family I work for we're open and honest about the cameras, I would have no problem with it. If she's not doing anything questionable what's the harm?

Those with nannies...
We have a nanny and don't have cameras. IMO, what is the point if you tell them they are there? If they are going to do something you don't like they will just do it out of the camera's sight. Nanny cams are super obvious (unless you spend a fortune) so they will know where they are. We had our nanny come a few days while I was home and then we just hoped all would be ok when we weren't home. At a year old your DC will be able to let you know if the nanny is doing something bad - they will cry when they come or act afraid. DD and my nephew (we share a nanny) both cry when she leaves, so we know she is taking good care of them!

We have a full time nanny, but do not have a nanny cam. We debated it for a while, and even bought a couple, but then decided to return them. We were extremely due diligent during the hiring process (interviewed 30 nannies, 16 in person and called every single reference for the one we wanted) and ultimately felt so comfortable with the one we hired. I also overlapped with her for a few days to get a sense of how she works.
With that being said, our nanny is in her late 40's and we were able to chat with a few of her prior families. Since your nanny is on the younger side, did she have a few references to share? If not, then I'd probably lean more towards getting a nanny cam.

I'm a mother and nanny. The little guy I watch comes to my house though so a nanny cam isn't an option for them (unless they just get an audio from the diaper bag).
Honestly, it would be awkward if a parent did that to me. I'd assume this means they don't trust me and it would be really unnerving to feel 'watched' all day. Ya know - in case of wedgies or boogers, and all that. lol. It would make me really awkward & self-conscious. Although, I actually did consider getting one for MYSELF. haha. Seriously. If I open my own home daycare (which I'd like to do) I'd really like to set one up, just so that if (God forbid) anything did happen to any children I'd have physical proof that I never ever hurt them. But the cams were all very expensive and the affordable ones only recorded something like 3 hrs at a time. That's useless for what I want. I'd want it to record full days/weeks/months, ya know?
If you do get one, I think it's definitely a good idea to tell her upfront about it, rather than her possibly finding it and feeling like you don't trust her. Plus it puts them on their best game, rather than waiting until they do something wrong, kwim?

Those with nannies...
I worked as a nanny( live in and live out) for 6 years and as a mom now I would have nanny cams if someone would watch my DC.
I heard many many stories and I would never trust someone 100% with my child. I had cams in two out of my 3 jobs, and I totally would do the same.

Trust me it's not that hard to find a friend, aunt, cousin who will give you "fake" references. References do not mean anything unless you actually meet those people.

I agree to some extent, but I chose my nanny over another because her reference sounded like a friend and not a real reference. I could tell the other one's reference was legit. Even if you meet them, how do you know that is isn't her aunt?

I have a nanny, and a nanny cam as well. We used it a lot earlier, but my nanny has been with us for about 8 months now, and we are good, so we don't check up as much. When DD is out on playdates, obviously we can't check up on her but when she is home, DH or I do check.

When I interviewed, I did disclose that I would have cameras and did. I don't think it's unreasonable and any nanny should be okay with it. I was able to see what the cameras saw in real time.

Those with nannies...
everyone with a nanny should have a nanny cam IMO. my brother got his at B&H in the city and they can log on from their phones. They had what they thought was a perfect nanny. my sister in law was home with her on maternity leave for 3 months and saw no issues. then when she went back to work they got the cameras. She was telling my nephew she was going to leave him alone in the house by himself if he wasn't good, calling him "bad" and letting him watch tv for over an hour and half without speaking to him. needless to say she was fired
btw they never told her they had the cameras
