Mirena pros and cons..

So I did a search on here and am reading some Chat Icon Chat Icon posts....

I have had some trouble with my AF and I would really like to fix it! ( some months last 3 weeks Chat Icon Chat Icon )

I didn't really want to go the whole BC method bec my DH and I really didn't want me to have the hormones again after not having it so long...but we are done after 3 kiddies..

So my dr recommended Mirena - bec the hormones are more localized and not running through my whole body..

But please clarify some questions:

1 I was told it has to be inserted while you have your period!?!? Really!?!?! Chat Icon Chat Icon

2 does a string really hang out?! All the time?!

3 someone mentioned that this bothered their DH durning sex?! Well that sounds annoying?

4 do you react to the hormones like the pill (ie sex drive or lack there of, etc)

5 - any other side affects I should prepare for?

Thanks

Still on the fence with what I want to do...it is more to help with my period - and not neck for birth control .. Ht is just an added bonus - I guess!

Re: Mirena pros and cons..

I've had it for two years and here are my answers to your questions:

1 I was told it has to be inserted while you have your period!?!? Really!?!?! Yes it was inserted I believe 4-5 days after the first day of my period, it really wasn't that bad.

2 does a string really hang out?! All the time?! Yes, but you don't feel it at all. And it doesn't hang out like you are probably thinking.

3 someone mentioned that this bothered their DH durning sex?! Well that sounds annoying? At first, the dr didn't cut the strings long enough so I had to go back after some complaints lol and now it's fine.

4 do you react to the hormones like the pill (ie sex drive or lack there of, etc) The only side effects I have are moodiness right before my period. And I tend to bruise easier now.

5 - any other side affects I should prepare for? I spotted for like six months. Nothing major, but I had to wear a panty liner every single day. After about a year, I don't get my period anymore. Just some mild cramping and very mild spotting for one day, but that's it! I love it and have no complaints. I couldn't be on BCP or similar birth control because of a blood clotting disorder I have.

I think the worst part of the whole process was right before I had it put in. I was so insanely afraid that I almost walked out of the doctor's office lol but now that I have it I'm so glad I do. You never have to worry about remembering to take a pill or whatever you use. Feel free to FM me with questions.

2 does a string really hang out?! All the time?! I NEVER saw or Felt a string. DH Said he felt it sometimes but was not bothersome.

3 someone mentioned that this bothered their DH durning sex?! Well that sounds annoying? NOT AT ALL

4 do you react to the hormones like the pill (ie sex drive or lack there of, etc) NO. was a great transition. I loved it.

5 - any other side affects I should prepare for? None that i can think of.

Thanks

I had mine in for 3 years. Got it taken out and got pregnant 2 months later with our 3rd.. I couldnt say anything better about mirena, i had a great experience. I will definitely put it back in. My periods stopped after almost a year, it was fantastic.. FM me if you have any other questions.

I just got the mirena put in on Monday so I can't offer any experience info but I can tell you the reason they like to do it during your period. It is because you during your period you are already dilated a little to let the blood out so it is easier to insert the device but it can still be done if you aren't on your period.

Re: Mirena pros and cons..

Mine slipped and I had it taken out. I tried BCP but felt "crazy" with them. I'm thinking of getting paragard since it's copper, no hormones. But the doc was hesitant since I've already had an IUD slip. But I'd go for a second opinion since right now the only birth control we are using is prayer.Chat Icon
