When did you start cereal?
I've been reading all the controversy about rice cereal. I'm considering skipping the rice cereal and going straight to oatmeal. I plan to discuss this with our pediatrician at the next appointment. I'm interested in hearing what others have done. Did you skip rice and go to oatmeal? Also, how old was your baby when you started?

Our ped told us to skip rice cereal and just do oatmeal because of the arsenic. We started oatmeal today at 5 months.

My dd will be 6 mths and she still hasn't had rice cereal. I started with oatmeal at 41/2 mths

My DD is a little over four months and we are going to start oatmeal on Monday. My ped said it is easier to digest than rice.

My DD skipped all grains and started on solids at 6 months (her first food was avocado, followed by carrots, applesauce, and peas ..).

same for DS; he started on avocado one week shy of 4 months.
He is 6 months now and rarely has any grains; just fruits, veggies and proteins...and he is doing great!!

Same here...started a touch over 6 months with avocado. Then moved to other veggies and fruits. Added oatmeal around 8 months. Never had rice cereal.

We skipped all cereal and did fruit and veg first at 5.5 mo. After that was all allergy tested I began oatmeal around 6.5 mo. Now I give oatmeal only. I've never tried rice since it can be binding but they have had rice in some baby food dinners.
Eta- I skipped cereal at first bc they have eczema and the ped said it can get worse with grains. But they have been fine and really don't have dry skin anymore. It was never really bad eczema.

When did you start cereal?
At 6 months we started with avocado. They both had oatmeal and we had rice cereal to thicken up some of the food I made. We usually mixed the fruits with the oatmeal and the rice cereal with veggies.

Exactly at 4 months. We did rice cereal only for 3 days just to make sure there was no allergy, then we switched to oatmeal and stuck with that.
The dr said to try Barley too, but I can't find that anywhere. Does anyone know if they still sell it?

We started oatmeal after her 4 month visit. I chose oatmeal for it's nutritional value compared to white rice.

glad you asked this! I was going to post the same thing today.
I was just reading all about rice cereal and wanted to see about going straight to oatmeal instead.
Is there a certain brand everyone started with of oatmeal? Gerber or Natures best, or something else?
DD will be 5 months next week and I think she is ready for food. Ped told us at her 4 month visit to wait since she was most BF...but it wasn't the normal Ped we see...and I want to try to see if she is ready or not.

Barley is really hard to find! I have found Gerber Barley at one Stop & Shop, but it is hit or miss. I usually order it off diapers.com - the brand they carry is called Healthy Times.
We started with rice at 4 months, but didn't last long on it bc it made DD constipated. I would probably skip it and go straight to oatmeal next time around.
