Breastfeeding essentials?

Finishing up my registry and I'm super confused about BFing. What do I need? I'm getting a Medela PIS and plan to use glass bottles when my mom watches the baby. Any other necessary items?

Just an FYI your insurance will most likely cover the pump. Essentials in my opinon. Lanolin nipple cream; nursing pads for leaking; I LOVE the mybreastfriend pillow maybe some BM storage bags?

Re: Breastfeeding essentials?

I didn't buy anything big prior to the baby being born because I wanted to be sure that breastfeeding worked out for me before I invested too much financially. I made sure that I had a few nursing camisoles to wear, disposable breast pads, lanolin cream, and probably 6 bottles just in case. It did work out for me with my first, so I went to Target after a few weeks and bought a pump, more bottles, etc. My pediatrician and the lactation consultant didn't recommend that I begin pumping until after the first month so I could establish my supply initially, so I really didn't need those things too soon. I did like my boppy pillow for under my arm when I was nursing also.

Definitely lanolin cream, nursing pads, and storage bags. I preferred the Lansinoh brand of all of those. I never liked the boppy but lots of people like that or the other versions. I used a nursing cover a lot in the beginning too. Maybe an extra set of pump parts to keep at work in case you forget something. Also a hands free pumping bra is very helpful. I like the simple wishes brand.

Re: Breastfeeding essentials?

as the pp mentioned check with insurance bc the pump may be covered

with the pump comes one set of parts and 2 bottles

I wanted a total of 3 sets (so i purchased two) bc that is how many times i pump at work and dont have the availability or time to really clean the parts after each use.
i got the following extras:
4 bottles
2 sets of connectors
2 sets of breast shields
membranes and valves

i also got the bottle spare parts so that i had nipples to use with the bottles i pump into

as the PP mentioned -
milk storage bags come in handy (i personally like the lansinoh brand bags best)
also nipple cream and breast pads for leakage
and nursing bras - nursing tanks did not support me enough so i always need to wear a bra

i also opted to get a pumping bra so that i could pump and be hands free - yes it looks ridiculous in photos but its so much easier to have it IMO

i think thats pretty much all i can think of - i had a nursing pillow and never used it.

you dont need an extra set of tubing for the pump or an extra charging cord

Oh yes-I forgot the nursing tanks and bras. DS is 5.5 months and I still wear a nursing tank everyday! I also use a cover when nursing in public or at people's homes.

Re: Breastfeeding essentials?

you will need this to clean the valves

medelas frezzer bags are a little pricey
BRU tend to leak when you defrost them in warm water. lansinoh seems to be the best imo.

i forgot about this - you def need it bc if you dont clean them well they will get mold

i use the one that comes with the munchkin bottle brush so its 2 in 1 (the wirey cleaning part is hidden in the bottom of the brush - it screws out - my mother had no idea it was there and complained to me that she couldnt get the nipples clean with the brush alone lol)

I would wait to be honest. I have so much junk and i didn't have a good enough milk supply for both of my kids. I would get the pump if its covered bc its free. I would also get the cream for your nipples. Otherwise I would wait. GL

Completely agree with ALL of this, plus a few nursing tanks. I had like 3 sets of pump parts - this way I could leave at set at work in case I forgot something and so that I wasn't just constantly washing pump parts.

Re: Breastfeeding essentials?

Get the gel pads you can put in the fridge! I can't remember who made them...but they are a BLESSING for soreness in the beginning!

Nursing tanks
Pads for leaking
A comfy spot to nurse (table with a drink, notepad & pen to track feedings length/side, book, phone, remote/tv, iPad for 1, 2, 3, 4am-ers)

I agree with a lot of these recommendations.

-pump
-bottles
-Lansinoh Cream
_Lansinoh Breast pads
-nursing pillow
-nursing bras
-nursing cover Aden and Anais blankets also work well for this and are super light weight.

nursing bras and tanks-target was great!

If you plan on pumping at home AND at work, get extra tubing/shields, etc and keep them at work.

The medela steam bags are good for cleaning/sterilizing, too.

This too! I used to pack a little basket with the remote, my nook, a pen, and granola bars and leave it on the couch for nighttime feedings.

Also wanted to add that camelbak water bottles are my best friend! They make it easy to drink a ton of water and they're easy to tote around the house and don't leak if you just throw them next to you during a feeding. DD is over a year and I still take one everywhere I go. Even DD drinks from them now.

Breastfeeding essentials?

I would try to do some reading about breastfeeding either with a book or a reliable website like kellymom.com
Breastfeeding was the hardest most rewarding experience of my life and while I hope that you have no problems it's nice to have some tools in your belt to overcome the obstacles and also have resources to go to IF they happen
