Advice on Gross Motor Delay (a little long)

DS is 9.5 months and was just evaluated for early intervention but does not qualify for their services because he is above their cutoff. Their cutoff is 7%. He was 9-10% on one test for Gross Motor and 25% on a different Gross Motor test.

At this point I just don't know what to do. I plan to talk to my pediatrician about possibly getting him a referral for private PT. I'm not sure if they'll do it because medical criteria for PT is different (not sure what that means exactly - maybe a physical issue?). Anyway, I'm just not satisfied with the outcome. Basically we left with 'he'll progress, he should be crawling by 12 months. Walking by around 19 months. If not, come back.'

I will work with him at home to encourage him to move. I just can't sit here and see what happens.

I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experiences and if you'd share any advice.'

may I ask what your concerns were that you had your child evaluated?

At 9.5 months it is very hard to show that there is a delay substantial enough to warrant services. That is just an "in general" statement.

We had my son evaluated just before his first birthday because he wasn't crawling, pulling to stand or cruising. Based on what you wrote I believe that you should have your child reevaluated at 1 year if your concerns are still there. Plus the criteria gets a little more challenging to meet so he or she may qualify.

In the meantime definately talk to your pediatrician if you have concerns.

All this is really not knowing what your concerns are.

my DS qualified for PT through EI at 7(ish) months because he had torticollis which caused a gross motor delay. he wasn't rolling, crawling or sitting up.

My DD JUST started crawling at 12 months.

Before that she was scooting on her butt.

My ped did give me a script for private PT. Actually, I just called and asked for one... They should give you one.

I just had DD evaluated at 13 months and she qualified. At 9.5 months she had just started cruising but didn't crawl, get to sitting, or pull to standing. The ped said to give her until a year and that she should find some way of moving by then. She started scooting on her butt just before a year and cruises everywhere. We saw a different ped that time and they wanted to wait until her 15 month appt to see how she progressed. A month later I contacted EI on my own and she did qualify. The PT immediately saw that her core muscles weren't developed as much as the should be.

I would definitely wait until he's a year and see if he's progressing. If not, call to have him evaluated again. I was told by my coordinator that they're supposed to tell you to wait 6 months but you don't actually have to. If you do, see if you can get a recommendation for a good agency to use. The coordinator actually pushed me towards a particular one bc she knew she would give me advice on what I could do on my own if she didn't qualify, would follow up with me, and would recommend another evaluation if needed. She also suggested agencies that do private therapy in case DD didn't qualify. GL!

Dd did not pull to stand or cruise until 11 months and started to crawl like a champ around 12mo. She walked at 16months. I was not worried that she was at the late end of motor because it seemed to me more that she just wasn't interested than that she couldn't physically do these things. I would wait until he is closer to 12mo.

Dd is now running, climbing and jumping all over the place now at almost 2 so I don't think her later motor development had any affect at all on her.

I had my son evaluated at 11 months. He was not sitting unassisted or crawling. Pediatrician wanted to wait but I pushed for it. The day that he was being evaluated he crawled and sat by himself. He did not qualify. He started cruising at about 15 months and walked unassisted at 17 months. I worked with him all the time on sitting and crawling. Always played on the floor. Let him cry if he couldn't get something to give him the motivation to get it on his own. I would sit him up and hold his legs gently to provide balance for him to sit. We worked on core strength with some exercises the PT that evaluated him taught me. We also bought a lot of toys that encouraged sitting and standing. They provided a lot of motivation for him.

He was 3 months premature. Now he is 21 months and walking/running up a storm.

I will say that when I read a lot of posts here it is easy to get caught up on the things my son does not do (not trying to start drama). Give it a little more time and then if need be have him re evaluated. He may one day surprise you.

My son was evaluated and qualified at 10 months old.

We had him evaluated based on answers to the 6 and 9 month surveys they give you in the peds office. He qualified for Speech, OT and PT.

I would probably look to private therapy if you are concerned. And have him evaluated again at 1 year.
