DS is 6 weeks old and we swaddle him for naps and nighttime.

When should we stop swaddling?

Any tips or advice?

I'm nervous he is going to rely on the swaddle and when we have to stop we are going to have to train him to sleep all over again.

Re: Swaddling

I would stop when he starts breaking free. We swaddled DS for about 5 or 6 months. I loved swaddling!!!

I swaddled my DS until about 3m, when he started to roll and break free. I only swaddled at night though, not for naps.

When we stopped swaddling, he was rolling around by himself and would always end up on his belly. That's how he was most comfy and he's been a belly sleeper ever since. The transition was super easy.

we gradually stopped around 3 months. first we stopped using it for naps. then, at night, we'd swaddle just her lower half, leaving her arms free.

we originally tried around 5 weeks, but her moro reflex kept waking her up. so, by 3 months, the reflex was pretty much gone which was a big help.

Re: Swaddling

dd is almost 4 months old and we are in the process of stopping swaddling
we only swaddle at bedtime and to slowly transition her we are swaddling just one arm for a few nights and then will stop completely
i think its harder for me to stop then it is for her...im so concerned she wont sleep as well but i havent seen any changes - plus shes been breaking out of the swaddle for weeks already and sleeping the same as when she was swaddled

I swaddled DS until 5 months exactly. He wouldn't sleep otherwise. It's been 2 weeks and he's NOT sleeping. It's a rough transition for us. I tried 1 arm out but it didn't make a difference. He'd just break free even the tightest swaddle and I was up all night (every hour basically). Now swaddle free he gets up 2-3 times. Hoping it gets better soon!

We swaddled DS until about 3.5 months when he started to break out. When Then I tried 1 arm for about a week and then nothing. I found that when he was breaking out, he was waking himself up (and he had been sttn). Once I stopped swaddling him, he started sttn longer than ever before!

You'll know when to stop. It's still early. You have to stop once they start rolling back to tummy, but that's still a while away. Also, DS now sleeps on his side. It's adorable!

Re: Swaddling

My pediatritican told us at our 4 month visit that we should have stopped already and I was like Chat Icon Chat Icon . He said when she starts rolling it can be dangerous. She hasn't really started rolling too much yet so we still swaddle her for naps and at night. She gets so busy rubbing her face and eyes that she can't actually fall asleep. When she breaks out if she wakes up we reswaddle her....or if it's one arm we just leave her. I hope to try to wean her off in a few weeks while I am home for the summer. It's soooooooo hard though!!!
