Day Care Centers and violations, odd question
Do you know if a parent has any re-course to get their money back if they pull a child out of a day care setting due to violations? Especially the registration fee? I don't expect you'd get a refund for the months the child already received services but just curious about other fees paid out. Tx

Did the violations happen during your child's care?

She's not in day care. I am looking at some 2 yo programs and I saw some violations (repeat) that I asked the director about. Of course she had answers but the next review wouldn't be until after DD was enrolled. If I enroll her, I, of course will be doing my own QA everyday, LOL. But if I saw another repeat violation of something that was reported as corrected I wouldn't be confident in their care. It was just a curiosity--I'd just like to know if I'd be out the registration fee if I pulled her based on their survery results.

Depends on what the violation is for, in my opinion. Some times violations are as simple as leaving a garbage pail lid. If its for something like supervision(out of ratio) or health and safety, than I would look more into it. Especially since it happened more than once. I used to work in a child care when I was younger and many of the violations were simply things but, always sounded worse online.

Re: Day Care Centers and violations, odd question
I can't imagine any day care would refund anything based on violations.
Honestly, you will be hard pressed to find a daycare with no violations. If you call NYS they will tell you exactly what the violation is for, and as a PP said, most items sound much worse on-line then they actually are.

I agree, I have the last 2 years worth of violations printed out and I at a few. I happen to work in a very reulated/highly audited field myself and can sort out the BS pretty well. But the ones that bother me, well, they bother me!
Do you know if I can get specifics from the oversight agency or do I have to rely on the center for that info?

I get that. I know that an auditor's job is to go in and find the problems, no matter how "minor" they might be. I was concerned about missing background checks and employees' bags being accessible to the kids.
Tx for the info about calling NYS, I will do that and see if the director's answers match their findings!

Honestly it sounds like you're not comfortable putting your LO in that center and you should look elsewhere. How are the other centers that are in your area?

I called and it really helped a lot of my fears. I was torn between two daycares and the woman I spoke to was very candid about the violations at each.

I only looked at 2, this was my 2nd choice. The first one is an actual nursery school w/ a 2yo program but if they need to be changed, someone has to come change them. Well, I will be at work 45 minutes away and the whole point is to give my Mom a break, so I am not asking her to be "on-call" for a poopy diaper, LOL. I doubt she'll be potty trained by Sept, so I was going to go with the "day care" program. I will have to look some more I guess.

Day Care Centers and violations, odd question
What area are you looking for care in? I agree when centers have violations more than 2 times for the same issue is a red flag in my eyes. Also since its regarding background checks...yikes.. Most likely they had a staff member on site who was not cleared from the state yet. That's not ok! I would look else where but, that's up to you.

Day Care Centers and violations, odd question
If its really just to give your Mom a break and I would still try and look for another place. One of the reasons why my kids are in licensed day care is because of the background checks. If they have a violation on something like that, where else are they cutting corners? JMO..GL!
