I could cry!
I just saw a preview of what my dc's first birthday cake will look like & I don't like it at all. It looks nothing like the picture I sent her to go off of. I know it's just a cak but I am so dissappointed. There is nothing I can do at this point - the party is tomorrow.

This happened to me too but I didn't see it until the morning of the party. I freaked out and they were able to fix it. It wasn't what I wanted but it was better then the original!

I actually don't think there is a way to fix this at all - I wish I could post pics but I don't want it to get back to her somehow how I really don't like the cake. I hate hurting people's feelings & especially since this person is a friend of a friend.

It's nice that you don't want insult her, but if you paid her and you're not satisfied with her work, you should definitely speak up.

You are paying her to make you a cake and went so far as to send her a pic of exactly what you wanted. If it doesn't look like the picture, let her know you aren't happy with it! I'm sure there is some way for her to fix it... she has an entire day.

ok- I am only posting this for a few min & then deleting but here is what I wanted followed with what she made- i covered her name up.
I did tell her that I wanted buttercream instead of fondant but come on!?

I'm like you - I wouldn't want to insult anyone, regardless if I paid - DH tells me I'm a sucker and I agree
However, what you sent and what is being delievered is not even remotely in the same ball park.
I would have to say something.
I'm not a baker or a cake decorator but I would think that using buttercream for decorating versus fondant would make it harder to achieve your original requested design. She should have said this to you though and made it clear.
I would write her back and say that isn't what you had in mind and what can be done at this point to get it to look closer to the original.
You have to speak up...sorry you have to deal with this.

oh gosh  where did the green come from on the bottom? the buttercream could have been smooth to look more like the original pic. I don't see any resemblance to what you sent.
I know you said you didn't want to insult her but I think its more insulting to you.

If the friend of a friend is doing you a favor, and you're not paying for the caek - then you keep quiet b/c you don't want to hurt her feelings.
If the friend of a friend is charging you for her services, YOU are doing HER a favor by giving her your business and your money - You have every right to speak up and you shouldn't feel bad or apologize for it.
I didn't see the pic, but if she couldn't do in buttercream, what you originally showed in fondant, she should have communicated that to you -

Does she have other cakes in the style and quality of the sample you gave her on her site? You said its a friend of a friend btu is she new at this maybe? I can see buttercream not having the same look as the fondant but she could have done buttercream with fondant accents.

Yes, she does have lovely cakes in all fondant & cakes in buttercream with fondant accents. There was a serious miscommunication on this one- I keep rereading our emails to see if I may have led her to go in this direction.

I missed the pic, but, you definitely have to speak up.
If you're not happy, let her know and run out to BJs or Costco and pick something up.
They have really nice and reasonably priced cakes!
You shouldn't pay for something you don't want/are not happy with.

I didn't get to see the photos you posted but I would speak up. You can get a lovely cake at your local grocery store, or costco. I would go over and explain the issue to them. I am sure they would understand and try to help you. At this point it does not sound salvageable to have her fix the cake. I am so incredibly sorry you have to deal with this.
