how long do you nurse your dc on each side?
DD is just over 2 weeks, so not sure if this helps, but I went to a LC and she told me to nurse for at least 15 minutes on one side and then offer the other side. She said she doesn't have to eat from the other side, and then to always start with the opposite one you started from last feeding. HTH.

In the beginning DD nursed forever on each side. Like 20-30 min on each side! I would have to pull her off...i felt so mean but she would just suck forever if i let her! Now she is 7 mos and is at 10 min per side. Sometimes longer. In the morning when there is alot of milk she nurses for awhile.

My DS is 9 weeks old. Right now he nurses for about 20 minutes on one side per feeding. If my supply is down a little he will nurse 10 min on each side.
For the first few weeks he did 30 min each side for each session

My Ped said do 10 mins on the first side and then as long as he needs on the second. And switch sides the next time.

This is my dd. She was literally staying on me forever. I would have to pull her off after a full hour of sucking but the last two days shes only been eating for about 10 mins on each side and then getting really fussy like she wants to eat (or suck) but cant. So I've been giving her a pacifier (even though she doesnt love it and gives me an angry face at first lol) when she does that and it seems to help, I just wanted to make sure that was ok and make sure 10 minutes was ok

This seems odd to me. You typically want to let them go as long as they want on the first side since the longer they go, the fattier the milk they get. Just about any LC would say let them finish the first side and then offer the second- if they take it great, if they don't great. Your ped, like most , probably doesn't have much training in bfing.

As a NB ds was only nursing on one side at each feeding and he would nurse for like 40 mins each feeding
Now I've switched to both sided feelings and he nurses about 10 min on the first side and 10 on the other. Sometimes it's a little longer
He is 3 months old
I wanted to add that when ds was about 2 months my LC said if he's gaining weight well I could start timed feelings and pull him off at 30 mins.your supply will eventually adjust and the feelings will get shorter.

In the beginning DS would sure 20-30 minutes on 1 side; and then maybe 15 or so on the other. If he even took the other side. Now at almost 5 months he's a quick 10-15 minutes maybe a little longer in the morning when I'm more full.

See, it actually makes sense to me, you want them to stimulate both sides this early in the game (DS is only 3 weeks) to increase milk production, if you do too long on the first side they might not have the appetite/energy to get much out of the second, then the second breast could go for hours without being stimulated. Doing 10 minutes on the first side is enough to give them a lil' snack and stimulate the breast, then when they get to the second one they can go to town.
My ped is a certified LC.

Thanks for this explanation! It does make sense. I guess there are a lot of ways to think about it and in then end I'm sure none of it makes a huge difference. Recommendations have changed and babies have thrived throughout them all. That's great about your ped. One of the LC's I saw was a ped. I wish all peds were!
