It's all scare tactics!!! 40 dollars a month now isn't much but if we keep voting the budget in it adds up. Yes we want the best for our children we all do but our children will not be able to afford to live here when they grow up. So are we really helping our kids? How about the administrators and the teachers do give backs? I don't hear those scare tactics. I'm voting no to send a message!

The "message" is only going to hurt the kids. I have been paying homeowners taxes for almost 20 years. Yes, it goes up every year but that is really expected as bills usually do not go down, in my experience.

Right but my point in discussing my increase as opposed to your increase before was that for you it was an insignificant increase, for someone like me it was a HUGE increase. If it doesn't slow down, what will happen?? It's easy to sit there and say it's not such a bad increase when your's wasn't!

Oh, I get that, I really do. I just don't want my kids to lose out on programs that they currently use and will in the future.

everyone we know is voting no - Sachem does this every year - threats of cutting programs - then the budget doesnt pass and magically almost nothing gets cut. There are ways to cut costs without cutting programs and they need to start doing that.
And even if programs did have to get cut - id rather have that than have to move out of the district b/c we cant afford the taxes anymore.
I just need to point two things out here. Do you live in Sachem? The budget has passed every year since at least 08. Also, if the schools continue to cut programs and the district becomes "undesirable," nobody will ever want to buy your house and you will be stuck in an sub-par school district.

Yes, definitely. The kids will lose out on TOO much for only $40/more a month.
Agreed, our children deserve the best we can give and I feel if I vote no and all the cuts go in to place, the only people I'm hurting are the children.
There so much else that people arent seeing here - children of low income families in the district are getting hurt. Their parents have less money to put food on the table with and will have to work more hours and be away from them. Of course its nice for the kids to have these extra programs but at what cost?
I personally don't think $10 more a week is that bad to make sure my kids get the best education they can possibly get. No Kindergarten will be horrible as what will people do to have their kids prepared for what they do in Kindergarten and for 1st grade?
The threat of no kindergarten is the tactic they use, because they know that people will think like you do. Has any LI district taken away Kindergarten yet when their budget failed? I haven't looked it up, but I really don't think so. Maybe they made it half day, but many districts have half day K anyway (Northport, Mt. Sinai, etc.).
Floyd cut K a few years ago. Cutting K is an option as it isn't mandated as is expensive.

Cut it or went half days? I have lived in that distrcit almost my entire life and I can not recall there ever being NO K. It has had half and full days over the years but never been cut out.
I agree with the scare tactics. Stop using the kids as a ploy. There are many, many ways to cut the budget without taking things away from the kids. It's just easier and gets people all up in arms and afraid to vote no. Why do they always go there first? Because there is a fear factor. Why not release your propsed budget months ahead of time and give the tax payers the option of looking at it and proposing different cuts? Becasue God Forbid the admins might have to take a hit or some other layer of excess might be cut. Here's an idea: Have 1 principal for all the elementary schools and just a VP in each school. For Floyd, that would cut 4 positions, I think. And they don't do much anyway, so save the money and don't take away gym or art or music. People need to get annoyed and loud and demand real changes.

Question -- Do you have to specifically register to vote for this or are you automatically registered by living in the district and by being registered to vote in a general election.
This is question is specific to Sachem district.

THIS is what people do not understand. In the end, saying no will cost you more money.

The budget in Sachem has been out for many months. They had a rally to explain it all and many meetings for the public to learn about what was going on.

I think you get something in the mail months ago to tell you where to vote. I think you can go to your nearest school and if you are not on the list, you can speak to them where to go.

I am voting Yes and can not understand why someone would vote no. Even before I had kids I voted yes. This is your community and to keep your schools good, kids on the right path, and property values rising...you need to vote yes. If people did their homework they would see that compared to all of the surrounding distrcist our taxes have had the smallest increase in the past 6 years. There were two years that there was no increase! Sachem should have increased small amounts every year so everyone did not freak out over 7%. But ofcourse no one remembers the increases since '07. The school district needs the communities help. Our reserves were depleted and Albany cut state aid and we had to implement CC. There is an issue with all of this but voting no will not fix it. I work so my kids have the best future possible. If they start cutting clubs, activities, honors programs...etc, this will effect your kids down the road. Is saving $10 a week really that much? And if this budget fails and the 3% increase passes...you saved a big $5 a week. If the taxes are too much you are living in the wrong place. People say they want change but will do nothing about it after voting no. Voting no will not send any message to Albany.
