Had an interesting convo with my sister...

She said that she would rather have another woman breastfead her child then use formula. I was actually shocked at this, and, even though I breastfed my first for almost a year I was like no way would I let someone else nurse my child or would I nurse someone elses. We got into a pretty heated discussion that I just had to drop because I eventually did have to supplement with formula and was irritated at her insistance on the issue.

I was jut wondering your thoughts....

Would you let someone else breastfeed your child and/or would you breastfeed another persons child?

No and no. Then again, I only BFed for about 4 days! Yes, breast is best, but it's not like formula is poison!

If I had a sick child, g-d forbid, and was unable to breastfeed or pump, I would consider using donated milk. I would not allow my child to nurse from another woman's breast.

I would not but then again I never even breastfed my own.

I feel formula is Perfect for my baby so no I would never even give it a sec of my time. But if I was that pro BM then I guess I would feel diferently.

Had an interesting convo with my sister...

I've thought about this before but I still say I'm not sure. My mom was a bit of a hippy and had her first baby in the late 70's. She said she had to go away once and left one of us (she can't even remember which!) with another nursing mother. She said it's just what they did, she didn't have a pump nor did she ever buy formula. She also mentioned nursing a friend's newborn bc the mom was having a hard time and thought the baby couldn't do it. She took him, popped him in her boob, and showed the mom that he was very capable! I can't imagine!

I can't think of a circumstance where I personally would let someone else nurse DD. She's never had formula, but I think I'd go to that before I'd think to hand her to another mother. Like others have mentioned, if there were a medical need for her to have pumped milk that would be another story.

But to each their own I suppose.

I think this is very popular in less developed countries (I assume because of lack of access to formula)

I think its very easy for her to have this opinion, being that she was never in the situation.

I agree with this statement. I unsuccessfully tried BFing in the beginning and my LC suggested getting donated breast milk to feed DS until my supply came in. DH and I discussed it and we just didn't feel comfortable with the idea... so for me I couldn't feed DS another woman's breast milk let alone have another woman actually BF my child.

Some people obviously feel very strongly about BFing and yes breast is best and all but like another poster said it isn't like formula is poison. For me there would have to be an absolute medical necessity to feed DS another woman's breast milk.

ITA and the thing is she was saying how strongly she felt about it and how she would avoid formula at all costs, but you do what is right for you! I felt like it was a slap in the face to me because I had to supplement at the end and with this next baby I have to go back to work soon and do not know if I can handle pumping. She doesn't work so has absolutely no clue how difficult it is so balance what you WANT to do and what you CAN do. IDK I was just so annoyed and I am one to advocate breastfeeding!

Had an interesting convo with my sister...

Women have been doing this since the dark ages. It doesn't shock or bother me. The use of a wet nurse is a status symbol in some parts of the world. I dont see a big deal about it at all.

Would I use a wet nurse?

No because I think formula is fine.

Would I bat an eye if someone I knew or loved used a wet nurse

Nope.

I'm very pro breastfeeding but I wouldn't give my DC another woman's BM (pumped or otherwise!) nor would I give my BM to another baby. Something about it just doesn't sit right with me. I have no problem with my kids getting formula if they need it. DS gets 2-3 bottles of formula a week becuase I don't pump enough at work. That's fine with me.

I wouldnt.

But its not a new idea. Back in the day (like not in this century or maybe even the last Chat Icon ) mothers rarely nursed their own children alone. They had wet nurses to feed their babies and help take care of them as well.

If it were a matter of survivial (like needing a wet nurse) then ok but I really don't see the need for this, either way. Now that being said, if I had a ton of extra breast milk I would probably donate it before I wasted it. But I would not be comfortable having my baby ingest someone else's milk and no way in hell would she be nursed by another woman. But I wasn't all that passionate about HAVING to breastfeed. If I felt that strongly I might have a different POV.

That's exactly it, you do what is right for you!! When I threw in the towel it was a difficult decision but I spent more time TRYING to BF feed DS than anything else and it was taking a toll on me, DS and DH! BFing is wonderful but if you can't or even don't want to, that's it. Women should be more supportive of one another no matter what someone's feeding choice is... I think I would be especially hurt having this come from my sister too so I feel where you are coming from. So many things with raising a child are such personal choices that it can be so hurtful when someone close to us gets preachy or righteous about the things they have decided to do or not do. She should accept you did more than a lot of people are able to and that is that.

as 'late' as the 40s America was BIG on wet nurses.. and due to the complications in the Chinese formula supply, wet nurse salaries are increasing there.. in the HERE and NOW

Generally the US and UK frown on it (ironic since both thrived on it as a social status for so long)

Still I think its up to the family. They do whatever they feel is best. Breast feed, Pump, formula, wet nurse, etc. As long as the baby is healthy and it works for the family, does it really matter?

It's how she feels and that's ok. It's similar to the debate about whether there are actual health benefits to extended nursing. Formula is very healthy. Let's face it, you can't tell the difference between a formula fed and bf baby. I nurse, but a big reason is the bonding for me. I was lucky, though, and had no problem nursing. Ofcourse, now I am on a dairy free diet, which sucks. To each his own. To answer the question, no I wouldn't. It would make me feel like crap to see someone else nurse my baby.

I didnt realize it was still such a popular thing and that people hired wet nurses in America into the 40's. Pretty cool! I like the idea of it and I think its a good one.

I said not for us, only because I Dont trust people anymore. With diseases, drug use, etc. - formula is a good enough alternative to me if I cant nurse myself Chat Icon
