Severe bullying/beating up. What can be done?

***Please dont quote ** My nephew is the type of kid who doesn't know when kids are playing or being mean. Some kids have been bullying him (hes 8) and have hit him before, but the final straw was yesterday when they kicked him in the groin and gave him a black and blue. The dr said looked like something ruptured. What who knows, but it can be serious because he had surgery there last year to connect something that never developed (he was a 28 week premie). My sister went to the school and the kids got lunch detention. Really?? Thats all?? They little effers kick him so hard they give him black and blue and they get lunch detention? I told her to call the superintendant and get a meeting with the parents. Not that most of the parents in this school even care. She is calling a CSE meeting too because she wants his school switched.

Im FUMING for her! They tell him to defend himself (hes in karate so he knows how to) but hes either afraid toget in trouble or doesnt realize they aren't playing til its too late.

I am so sorry! I have no advice, but that brought tears to my eyes! Chat Icon
And I can't believe all they gave the kids was lunch detention!!?!?! WTH?!?!?!
I hope your sister is able to get him out of there. I think bullying is one of my biggest fears - kids can be so horrible - and you know where a lot of them get it so I guess your sister can't expect too much help from the other children's parents.
Good luck to her and I hope your nephew heals quickly and they find a better place for him to be because, I think the school's response is unacceptable!!!!Chat Icon

Re: Severe bullying/beating up. What can be done?

I would find their parents and kick them in the groin till they get bruised...JK..but this really upsets me. I would make sure she follows through with that meeting with the Super and to bring documents from the doctor, definately make a big deal out of it. Yea, it sucks that your nephew isnt more assertive, but an 8-year old shouldnt have to worry about defending himself physically while in school...and just give those littls sh*ts lunch detention are they serious? Im sorry your nephew has to go through this. Bullying is such a big issue right now, Im shocked the school didnt take it more seriously.

OMG!! I am so mad for you guys!! That poor boy!! I know this is going to sound harsh (it's just my initial reaction), but I would contact the parents of the kids who did it and make them pay medical bills, etc. Ugh! My heart is breaking for this boy...

This is so upsetting to hear, I feel so badly for him Chat Icon I would get a dr. Note of how this injury could have been very serious, bring it to the principal/ super until this stops. Kids are so mean to each other, it's sad

Re: Severe bullying/beating up. What can be done?

I know my whole family wants to beat up the parents! lol I told her she needs to go above the schools head because this happend on the playground where they are supposed ro be supervised and its not the first time hes been hit. I told her to talk to his karate instructor too to let him know its ok to use his force to defend himself. My little brother was the same way but now- watch out if you piss him off. He doesnt hold back. At best, the kids get a warning that if they dont cut their shiit they will be punched and he will do it too. And rightfully so. There is only so much bullying one can take.

I would also ask the teacher to have a talk about physical violence and bullying in class or possibly try to get the school to do an assembly. I'd reach out to the parents and if it ever happens again I make a huge fuss and would look into pressing charges or maybe you can have a cop come speak to the class. That would scare the crap out of them.

Re: Severe bullying/beating up. What can be done?

This is plain crazy !!! I would of lost my mind! I would call and have a sit down meeting with the principal and tell him that this is not enough. Lunch detention are you kidding me! The schools number one priority is to keep our children safe. I would not take just lunch detention as a punishment I would tell the principal that you want a more stern punishment if not go to the superintendent.

Best of luck.

HELLS YEAH! School should be a safe place where children (especially at the age of 8!) can feel safe to learn and develop. This is not acceptable. I would take it as far up the chain as needed, excusing violence in school is never acceptable. It will just keep happening if all they do is lunch detention.

She needs to make a bigger "stink" about it. Schools, unfortunately only respond when parents are strong. She needs to go back to the school and speak to the principal about how strongly she feels that this wasn't handled properly. She needs to read up on the school's anti bullying policy and the states. She needs to be prepared. Was an incident report filed? Bring drs notes etc. if she still doesn't get a response - directly to the superintendent of schools - infact I'm so upset by this that she should go directly there. See how that goes... I'm pretty sure she can file a police report to have it on file. Schools don't want that publicity, so why not.

Please keep us posted.

OMG, ITA! I'm in tears reading this, your poor nephew! Chat Icon

I really don't know what I'll do if one of my DC has to deal with this shit in the future.

eta- I'd be contacting the local news stations if I didn't get the response from the school that I wanted.

Make sure every single complaint is made in writing to the school. Copy the school board, principal, whoever you can to have everything documented.

Personally, I would also contact these children's parents. Discipline needs to begin in the home. I don't mean to say parents can always control their children but they are responsible to try. They need to know that you will hold their children accountable and then if they fail to act.

Re: Severe bullying/beating up. What can be done?

MOST public schools in NYS are supposed to have a no bullying tolerance policy, although if it isn't reported to anyone higher than the principal it doesn't always get enforced. If this is a public school I would suggest 100% reporting it to the board or the superintendent. Others are right that schools don't necessarily take things seriously unless the parents make a big stink. Your poor nephew should NOT have to endure that at school, and the parents could press charges for that kind of physical violence. Perhaps if they informed the school that if the school's response isn't satisfactory, the police will become involved, it will get more action. Good luck to you!!!

That would NOT be okay - lunch detention if anyone ever laid a hand on my child. I would 1000000% take this over the school and contact the superintendent and demand that something be done. The kids who did this need to be brought it with their parents and spoken to, as well as a harsher punishment. At 8 years old i think they still are scared enough if they get into trouble. They should be writing apology notes to your nephew and I would not stop until proper steps were taken to ensure that this would not happen again. I am so angry for you - that is terrible. No child should have to get hurt from another child at school.

The more I'm thinking about this and the fact that it isn't the first time AND it's escalating in severity, I think I would press charges. I'd also go to the superintendent. I think the principal was given his/her chance and majorly FAILED. I'm just so upset and angry for your family!

I would press charges if some kid beat up my kid that he had to go to the doctor!

Even if it was just to scare the other kids into not doing it again.

Lunch detention? That's awful and makes me so sad. I'd go even higher than the principal. This is such a huge deal and something needs to be done!

Wow-the principal?
I would call and speak with the principal and ask why further disciplinary action wasn't taken and from there move on to the higher ups. Personally I wouldn't jump to the higher ups before speaking with the teacher/principal. In fact the higer ups might ask if you did that first before they get involved. I would want to have an adult's version of the incident as well. I would do all contacting immediately and if you don't hear back from the teacher/principal in a timely manner-then of course move on to the higher ups. The teacher/principal know the kids involved and can give you a better idea as to what happened.

Hoping your nephew feels better soon-no kid should have to deal with bullying and for sure those parents need to know what their kids are doing. Ask the principal/teacher if those kid's parents were notified of their child's bullying as well.
