Need to give her Amox (any tricks?)

My usual good child is betraying me. She has taken Amox a million times (feels like) but now all of a sudden she says it ‘burns’ and its ‘yucky’ and coughs like she wants to gag. The only way I have conned her into taking it was to let her take a break for some fruit juice after each bit (I had to give it to her in three sessions).

AND because of this, she is now rejecting her Claritin … something she’s been taking EVERY SINGLE DAY since 2yrs old. Its ‘yucky’ and ‘burns’ too.

So I’m tempted to add a spoonful of sugar (hypothetically and somewhat literally) to amox so she’ll take it.

Any suggestions?


The reason she needs it is because she had a procedure done to remove a cyst on her neck. It was a lot deeper than the doctor thought it would be so it’s a deep wound. There are internal sutures to keep it shut as well as some near the surface (Dissolvable). The dose is one 1tsp, three time a day.

I used to put it on a spoon and put chocolate syrup over the top....worked for a while.

I have been able to get DS to take his meds in an ounce of 100% fruit punch.. He never gets straight up juice so he is pretty excited to drink it and because it is a small amount, he drinks it all up!!! As for his Claritin, I had to get the reditabs and I dissolve them and put it in his milk or yogurt.. I just learned about the fruit punch a couple of week ago when he was really sick and refused to take Tylenol!! So far I haven't had a problem with it!

100% fruit juice! GOOD point.. she never gets it straight either! Gonna have to pick some up.

I cant help with amox, i have to bribe for either kid to take it. But does claritin come in chewable tablet? My kids use zyrtec and we get it in chewable tablets and they give us no trouble at all, might be worth a try?

dr told me it was ok to mix in yogurt - I did a small amount so I knew he got it all .ds loves yogurt so ate it up no problem and didn't know it was in there

she loves the go-gurt.. wonder if I can't sneak that in.. but smelling it myself it seems pretty strong..

I mix it in yogurt and my son has no problem. And that was with Augmentin which is MUCH worse tasting and smelling than Amox. Good luck! My doc says you can mix it in pretty much anything to get them to take it. He suggested STRAIGHT chocolate syrup.

You could try holding her nose while she takes it. Sounds silly but can make it a game. For whatever reason it works sometimes. You can treat her & tell her it will take the burn/yuckies away, and then once she takes it all tell her she gets a big treat.

so we picked up some juice.. I let her choose and she picked apple and grape.. both 100% pure. She loved the apple juice and get this.. took the syringe out of my hand and finished off the ENTIRE dose in one shot! Then quickly washed it down with apple juice!
