(Update with question) 9 Months old nebulizer treatments

DD had a fever yesterday we took her to the ped and he gave her medicine and told us to use the nebulizer 4 times a day. DD screams her head off everytime we use it. Is there anything I can do to maker her not cry or any tricks? TIA!

ETA: Thank you for everyone's replies. I see that everyone who had to use this on their DC has used it several times. This is all new to me I have a DS who is 3.5 and never had to use this. I assumed this would be a 1 time thing for DD. So this is something that will be used all the time when she is sick?

Ugh, I feel your pain. DD2 had to use one at the same age. We would put tv on and face her at it before doing the treatment; her big sis (who she just lights up when she sees) would dance in front of her or hold up toys to distract her; we never actually put the mask on her, we would just hold it up to her face or to the side of her face so she would still be inhaling the meds but wasn't upset by wearing the mask. The SOUND of the thing is just awful.

My son just finished a week of treatments and I would give him a pacifier and then put on the mask. If he got fussy, I would take off the mask, give him some toys and just put the steam under his nose so that he inhales at least something. It worked. Its so sad to see them like that. Good luck!

Awwwww! Poor baby. What I did with my son was put Mickey Mouse on and instead of using the mask, the dr said I could just put the end (not sure what its called) right under his mouth/nose so it didn't seem so scary to him. He barely knew it was there. Hope that helps and that she feels better soon!

If you can, wait until she is asleep to do it. It's easier that way. We had some success with this but it's not always the perfect solution.

We also just put the steam under DD2's nose and we did the paci with her because she would just breathe through her nose

There is a pacifier attachment for the hose!

You can also do as AP suggested-use the flat attachment piece and hold it in front of her mouth and nose

Ds just screams through them. We can get one done right after he falls asleep at night. The sleeping one is the only calm one.

DS screamed the first time; but now he sits calmly if I put a cartoon on or sing songs to him. Usually he is very calm right after a feeding. I even did it once while he was very sleepy and he just dozed off in my arms.

do it while she takes a bottle. she has to breathe through her nose while drinking and will inhale the tx at the same time.

we dont use the mask.. he's 6 months old.. but it's a lot easier when he is sleeping.. but he just seems to want ot play with it.. doesn't bother him..

but wait till hes sleeping if you need to.

DS was 3 months old when he had to be on treatments.

Doing it while sleeping didn't work for DS as the machine would wake him up.
Not to mention he had to have back to back treatments every 4 hours. (sometimes 2 hrs)

The pacifier worked some times & other times he just screamed all the way through it.

When he got older TV was the only thing that would work...and it wasn't just TV it HAD TO BE Yo Gabba Gabba, New Friends. The one with Jack Black....

I remember having to bring my laptop to the peds w/YGG episodes from the library so he'd stay calm. Of course New Friends wasn't one of them so I found pieces on YouTube to play.

If this isn't a one time thing...he will get used to it. DS is now 3 & is a trooper with treatments. He holds the mask himself & does it with no problems.

At that age we didn't use the mask. We just held it against their chins and let the steam go up. I tried to do it a couple times while they were sleeping, but it would wake them. Honestly, at that pint, i just let them cry through it. My DD was so sick when she first started the nebulizer at 4 monhts old and she cried through the whole treatment at the Drs office. The Dr told me it was good for her to cry through it because she was really breathing in the steam. It stinks and it's heart breaking, but it's to help her. Now at 2.5, my twins will sit down and hold the masks on their face while watching tv. That pacifier attachment looks awesome though. I wish i knew about it 2 years ago!!!

I was told by the Ped to use it if I felt I need to. So when either of my kids get really bad colds and coughs, I use it to open up their lungs so they can breathe. Their colds and coughs always go away faster when I use it.

My peds told me when she sounds congested or a chest cold we would use it. Rx meds only when necessary otherwise saline treatments only to help break up the chest congestion.

I give my dd toys and let her sit in front of me and just hold it by her face.

Ds is 5 now but from the age of 9m until 4 y old, every time he got sick it went to his chest and he needed the neb. We have taken it on vacation, done treatments in the car, etc. Until he was 3 we never used the mask, just get the "smoke" close and dc will breathe it in.

Also, I kept handy toys he liked and could sit and play, or give dc your phone or tablet to play with, etc. Things he wast normally allowed to have worked well.

As far as long term, you won't know until your child's next cold. Ds never had ahead cold during those ages bc everything settled in his chest, he would get a runny nose and within 48 hours he was on a nebulizer. It wasn't fun.

But I will say, if your child does become a regular nebulizer user, they may out grow it. The last episode ds had was March 2012, it was a really bad one but he has had several illnesses since and has not needed his "Gray medicine" (albuterol) as he calls it.
