Outside deck on the 2nd floor and a toddler

Our new place has a beautiful deck on the 2nd floor. We would like to use it but we have a 3 year old and I am afraid to put anything out there that he could use to stand on. He would NEVER be out there by himself though.. We are going to put a gate on the staircase that is attached to it (both top and bottom) so he can't access when we are outside. I am going to get the mesh cover that goes around the rail to keep him from climbing on it. I would like to get a small table and chairs for out there for us but I am up in the air about it... Does anyone have an upstairs deck and a toddler? What did you put up there?

I don't have one but my parents do. I just made sure I was always right ontop of him out there. He would sit in the seat when we would eat out there. We never put a gate on the bottom stairs or the top stairs, but he knew not to climb it. When we were down in the back yard, he knew he was only allowed to play on the grass or the downstairs deck.

We have a hi-ranch and have a deck all along the second floor. We have a large patio set up there with 8 chairs.

DS is almost 2 and this year he is not allowed on the deck at all unsupervised.

We have a gate at the top of the stairs that was built with deck, so it's a swinging gate that's part of the railing. We added a lock to it.

We just make sure that someone is always out there with him. And anytime he's on one of the chairs we reinforce that he's to sit on them. So far we haven't had any issues.

Thank you... That makes me feel better... I am going to put 2 chairs and a little table out there. The door to the deck has a lock on the top of the door which he can't reach. Even if he stands on a chair.. As I said, he would never be out there by himself..
