fifth disease and vomiting????
hey everyone
has anyone had an experience of a more severe case of fifth disease that included vomiting and diarehea.
my DD (5) was sent home from school on tuesday cause she threw up - came home - got sick three more times and then diarehea.
wednesday she had a low grade fever, very lathergic and the fifth disease - bright red cheeks came up - took er to the drs - 5th disease. i have seen tons of these cheeks - it is sooooo fifth disease.
today the rash is gone but she is sooo lethargic - not eating or drinking - about a 100 fever - this is so not like her so back to the drs.....
another dr there today said it cant be fifth disease cause she would because she wouldn't be this sick and it doesnt cause nauseau and vomiting....
im confused - i guess whatever it is needs to run its course - but was wondering if anyone else had an experience like this?

Sounds more like scarlet fever you get from untreated strep. Was she given a rapid and a culture done? I would take her back and ask for a strep trest.

Thanks. The quick strept teat came back negative but they were gonna let it sit for 24 hours just incase

They are supposed to let it sit for 24, and if nothing 48 hours. Sometimes it takes 48 hours to get a positive. Please make sure they do. I had a friend last year whose child was septic at LIJ bc the Albany ER got a negative rapid,dr didn't want to do the culture. Mom insisted on it. Long story short is strep does not always come up positive on the rapid. Some drs say it is 98% accurate but it is actually much lower (80 something %). I know many cases rapid was negative, culture positive after 48 hours.
I hope your DC feels better soon. BTW it IS possible that yoour dc has BOTH fifths and strep or fifths and a stomach bug. My dd had two different bugs not long ago. Even if are very careful you could be exposed at the drs office, or somethings have several day to several week incubation period so you could get sick, then come down a few days later with something you were exposed to the week or days before you got sick originally.
