Has anyone been to the ped lately and if so have you heard anything about new guidelines in regards to feeding you infants. I took my son bc he had pink eye and the Dr. said let me give this to you bc of your daughter who is starting solids and if I had any question to email or call him. Anyway, I’m reading over them and am surprised how different it is from my son. ( Who is only 3). It states it’s the new 2013 recommendation. Here are some of the things I am noticing are different and I am wondering if anyone else has heard or read this.

Eggs- (whites and yolks) ok to introduce anytime after 4 months

Peanuts- Ok to introduce between 6-12 months.

Fish/shellfish can introduce anytime after 6 months

I haven't heard of it from my ped, but I'm not surprised about the eggs and shellfish recommendations since many cultures around the world feed these foods to their babies.

I should add that I gave my dd egg yolks and she threw up every time. This seems to be a common experience.

Haven't heard anything about it from my ped. He had us wait till 1 year for eggs. Peanuts and shellfish are after 3 years, but I'm going to be asking at our 2 year well visit about them because we have no allergies in our family.

Wow that's late for the peanuts and shellfish.
My ped said 2 years old for both.

Our ped also told us to wait to 3 for peanuts. My second is now 19 months, and I asked if I could, and she still said no.

At DD's 9 month appointment her ped gave the green light for everything except honey. I've done eggs and peanut but haven't tried shellfish yet.

I think the new logic (or just one theory) is that babies can fight stuff better prior to 6 mo so if you intro this to them now there is less of an change of allergy. Sounds like your ped read up on some new info and is on that wagon now so to speak.

Mine hands out literature but tells me to do something different (lit says feed at 4 mo, he says wait til 7) lol

Our ped said eggs were fine after 6 months so long as there was no family history. That was the whole egg, not just the yolk. We were told to avoid honey, nuts, and shellfish at the time. Now at his 12 month appt, the ped said we can give him everything (including peanuts) unless there is a family history of allergies.

Yeah, that's why I want to discuss it with him. I'm not a stickler for sticking to what the ped says, so DD has had honey nut cheerios before (by accident actually when i was eating them one day), but continues to eat them with no problems. So I'm sure it's fine. They didn't want me doing yogurt until 1 year either, but I started earlier. They tend to be more cautious at my practice.

Thast exactly it. He has a whole paragraph about that there is no conclusive evidence that delaying milk, egg, soy wheat etc will prevent/protect againt food allergies.

I think they are finding that the delays in introducing food does more harm than good when it comes to allergies. I gave DD everything but honey when I was ready, never even asked the ped. We have no family history of food allergies. DD had a milk allergy but from what I understand that isn't a true allergy but a sensitivity in the gut.

This is probably bc my DD allergist said current research shows if you wait until 2 or three to start more allergic foods the more likely your child is to be allergic to them. The best time to introduce everything to reduce your risk of allergies is around 6 months. He said this 2 years ago btw so not sure it is that new but I think it has taken a while for some peds to make the newer recommendation.

DS's ped at 1 said he could have anything but shellfish. I waited on everything, no allergies. Not sure if he has had shellfish (do shrimp count?) b/c we never eat fish. There are no allergies in our family. But i will still wait until 1 if I have any other kids.

Our ped told us for DS 2 everything was ok after 6 months (except for honey due to risk of botulism).

For DS 1 there were more foods we were supposed to wait until after 1 year for but, I don't recall off the top of my head.

Re: Did anyone else hear this about new food guidelines?

I'm surprised that you said before 6 months. My DS is almost 6 months and at our 4 month visit we discussed the pros and cons to feeding what when. Basically the new recommendations are to try not to introduce any foods until 6 months, especially with EBF babies. You can start as early as 4 months, but they tend to lean more towards holding off.

There are different debates as to whether or not introducting foods too early or too late as to developing allergies since the big thing has been to delay the foods and there are many kids with severe allergies out there.

We went over our family history and since we had no family history of allergies to food we were given the ok to start certain foods at 4 months since my DS was already exceeding the recommended formula amounts.
As for eggs- that was 9 months and peanuts after a year, same thing with honey.

Re: Did anyone else hear this about new food guidelines?

My pediatrian never warned us off of ANYTHIING.

Honey, nuts, fruits, eggs, fish, etc. Nothing was taboo.

It could be because we are mixed cultures with Chinese and Hispanic and she was Indian and we all had conversations about our own upbringing first?

We didn't give her egg for a long while because *I* dont eat egg anymore (since she was born) but by 9m she was digging it, still is. Peanut butter same thing mostly, I held off because we had none in the house. It wasn't vital to me. Protien should come from beans and meats in my mind, but she had it here and there and never thought twice about it. Strawberries, young. Fish, her first solid we could eat out with her.

Glad to see the recommendations are more open.

I mean my pediatrician and obgyn both laughed with me at the whole 'no sushi and no med rare meat' thing for pregnancy. How do you think that would fly in Japan!? I ate sushi every month when I was preggo but never more than once a week. Heck I had it the day she was born! and medium rare meat? You betcha! Point was don't get sick. Eat healthy and safe, so same goes for AJ.

i think they are going back to the original recommendations, because if i am correct i read that the longer you hold out the more likely your child will have an allergy to that particular food.

both my kids were introduced to peanuts and strawberries under a year, and neither have allergies.

I def. think the guidelines are changing. Even within our pediatrician practice we were told different things by different doctors. I did eggs (whole) by about 9 months. Fish (like talapia, salmon, etc.) around the same time. After 1 year I wanted to give PB and shellfish but DH didn't agree. So, we settled on 15 months after talking to ped. Now at 18 months she loves both! In a way I feel better knowing she has had all of the highly allergic foods already.
