A sleep-strategy WWYD?

So my 5-month-old DD typically sleeps 12 hours a night (8pm-8am), waking to nurse once somewhere in between.

Until recently it was usually between 3 and 5am.

Lately, she's been sleeping right through until about 6:40am before waking for a feeding.

Here's my dilemma: If I get up and nurse her at that time, by the time I finish feeding her, put her back in her crib and she falls back asleep, it's nearing 8am, the time she has to wake up. (I'm a FTWM and she has to wake up at 8am).

I thought about ignoring her cries at 6:40am in hopes she'll eventually stop waking and sleep straight through to 8am, but I worry she's really hungry because it's been about 11 hours since she's eaten at that point. If I don't get up she ends up hysterical after a while.

I know my DD will go 12-hours or more a night, so I'm NOT willing to get her up for the day at 6:40/7am. But does feeding her at 6:40am and putting her back to bed only to have to wake her 45 minutes later make sense? Then again, does having a CIO episode at 6:40am make sense?

Ugh! I'm confused. I wish she would just go back to waking for the feeding at 3am!

How would you handle?

TIA

I have to be honest, I don't understand the "12 hours in the crib" rule. In my experience, 6:30-7 is a totally normal wakeup time for a baby, even a toddler. I would just wake up for the day, honestly.

I think wake-up times vary depending on the baby and 6:30-7 is not a normal wake-up time in my house. My DD sleeps 12 hours, sometimes even longer.

Also, when she wakes at 6:30 it's for a feeding, it's not an up for the day wake up. (When she's had enough sleep and wakes up for the day, she wakes up happy and talking. When she wakes in the middle of the night, she wakes up crying).

Curious where you got your rule from? Not because I think there's anything wrong with it, but just in my extensive sleep-related reading, I've never come across it!

What I would do if I were you, is try to soothe her back to sleep at 6:30, instead of feeding her. I don't think I'd do CIO at that time after so many hours of sleep. Another idea - at this age, it's very typical for babies to go to bed between 6 and 7 at night, so you could also consider moving up her bedtime (incrementally, over like a week) to get that 12 hours.

Okay, I edited my original post because I think the word RULE was overshadowing what I was trying to get across.

As far as my 12-hour policy, after following my daughter's cues and seeing her consistently sleep 12-13 hours a night, it's become our established pattern. And it works for us.

Thanks. I thought about moving up her bed time, but as a FTWM working in the city, it's just not possible.

Exactly! My DD is the same way!

Can you try feeding less and less? Eventually she might stop waking for it. I did this, and by 6 months she was sleeping 12 hrs

I'm sorry, I misunderstood, I thought she was waking at 6:30 and you were feeding her just so she'd go back to sleep for the "12 hour rule." I also read it as you have an older DD who slept 12 hours so this is what your DD should be doing as well.

Anyway, that is a tough call. If she isn't really ready to wake but is hungry, such an awkward time window that happens in.

I'd do the awkward feeding for another month and then CIO at 6 months. I bet she'll STTN after 3 days of minor crying!

And yes, wake times vary by kid! My oldest is awake by 7 everyday. My twins sleep until 10! (they are at home with an au pair)

A sleep-strategy WWYD?

Around 5 months my dd started waking up earlier and earlier...she goes to bed between 7-7:45 and sttn she used to wake up at 7:30, then 7, 6:45,6:30 now we are waking at 6. She doesn't eat between 7ish and 6:30 am
Could she just be changing her sleeping habits? It doesn't seem right to me to have her go back to sleep to have to wake her up.

What would happen if you dream feed her at 3 am?
Could you put her to bed at 7:30 pm? I know my dd can't stay awake at night
