Croup

DD is 11M and woke up Sat morning with a hoarse voice. Sun morning she woke up with hives (she did have pineapple for the first time on Fri). Took her to the Dr. and he said the hives are an allergy and she has a URI. My SIL is a pediatric nurse and she is telling me its the beginning stages of croup and a viral infection. She is not coughing and is not running a temp. Eating and activity is the same. She is not sleeping well tho and she is clingly.

For those with LO that had croup, how long after the horse voice did the cough appear?

And, isnt it suppossed to come after a cold?

DD did have a minor ear infection 2 weeks ago

Does she have the symptomatic barking cough? If so, you should try a nebulizer or if its bad bring her to the dr. As she may need a steroid to keep her airway open.

Croup is an unmistakable cough that sounds exactly like a barking seal. My DD had it several times. She had no other symptoms besides the cough and needed oral steroids each time. Hers always came right before a cold. What your DD has does not sound like croup. You can not mistake the sound of that cough.

I know what it soulds like (I youtubed it) and she does NOT have a cough at all. My SIL is telling me that the cough is to come any day now. That the hoarseness is the 1st tell tale sign, cough appears a few says later.

It doesn't sound like croup from what you are describing. My son had croup several times this winter and it always started out of nowhere (no hoarseness or anything) with a barking cough in the middle of the night and needed to be treated with liquid steroids. It usually is followed with a cold 1-2 days later, not before, in my experience.

My DDs croup always started with the cough - no other symptoms before it. We would hear the cough in the middle of the night and knew we'd have to go to the doctor the next morning. It always came out of nowhere.

My DS always gets coup and has never had the hoarse voice.

My twins recently had croup and like all the PP's, never had any other symptoms. No hoarse voice, not even a cold before. It came out of no where while they were sleeping actually. I wouldn't worry that your DD has croup. Could just be a little cold.

DS has a cold and in the middle of the night, out of nowhere that weird cough started ... we rushed to hospital cause he seemed to have trouble breathing ... he had a fever and stuffed nose, but that was it. They told us it was croup and gave a steroid or something.

but don't remember any other symptoms, voice was totally normal

DS started with cold symptoms one night the next morning he had a fever and had it through out the day. I took him to the dr she said viral. That night he woke up coughing and had what is called Stridor breathing. Scariest thing I have ever heard. I have him a neb which in about 2 mins I knew it was making it worse. I brought him to PM peds and sure enough he had croup. After the meds were given he had a horse voice and a cough and cold symptoms.
