Flouride - Pros and Cons
Do you give your child flouride? I know that benefits for teeth but what are the negatives? DS' pediatrician has been beating me over the head about giving him vitamins with it....but I haven't. I feel it is already in our water, why give more? Now, we just came from DS' first dental visit and I was again given a prescription for vitamins with flouride. I don't know enough about the negatives to have a argument about why I dont give it, other than I don't.

LOL this topic is all over this board lately!
If you are on LI your water does NOT have flouride in it. The main negative is that it's technically poison. And nobody really knows the long-term effects of it.

NYC has been adding fluoride in low concentrations to tap water for almost 50 years.
Cavities in fluoride supplemented water communities are decreased by about 30%
You can read some info in the above site. It comments on lots of the literature.

IMO its fine. And yes that is JMO. I grew up in an area that had it in the water, we use flouride toothpaste and I got flouride at my destist all growing up. Here I am 40 years later and still kicking with only 1 head.....
I think we are truely getting too crazy about the flouride, vaccines, food.
But again ONLY MY OPINION.

Just to point out-- I also had flouride in water growing up and flouride treatments from the dentist, and flouride in toothpaste (and also a ton of cavities regardless) but this is different from ingesting it in vitamins, which is what docs today are asking our kids to do.
I also think people should do what they feel is right, but I also feel that this is one of those things they should really look into first.

I also think people should do what they feel is right, but I also feel that this is one of those things they should really look into first.
The only reason they push the vitamin with the fluoride is cause we don't have it in the water. Peds in NYC don't usually give the fluoride cause the water has it. So nope not any different in my view.

If you are drinking the water and it has it in it, you are ingesting it.

I was just asking my ped about this yesterday. I find it so strange that it's recommended to give vitamins with fluoride but is so important to use toothpaste without it until they learn not to swallow it. She said it's helpful for their current and future teeth so it is recommended until I think age 12. They want to make sure they don't get more than the recommended dose so with just the vitamins, we can control the amount they get. In my limited research, webmd does recommend .25mg through 12 months and .5mg through 3 years and according to the Suffolk Co Water Authority, there is no fluoride in out water.

My DS will NEVER gets it either. It's poison. There were even cases in US that kids died in a dental office during a fluoride treatment in the last 10 years. Plus google fluorosis!!!

I asked a similar question a week or so ago and didn't get any good evidence that would lead me to avoid fluoride, my question about toothpaste in particular. A lot of "IT'S POISON" with no good backing. Toothpaste is spit out, the benefits outweigh whatever negatives there are (still trying to figure them out...)

I did google this and it said that flouride would have to be ingested in high quantities to cause this. I'm curious as to what exactly is considered "high quantities".

I don't know what kind of backing you need. It is poisonous--that is just a fact. Same as bleach...some people use bleaching agents to whiten teeth but you wouldn't injest it!
Sure, it might prevent cavities, but I'd rather do that by making sure they are brushing 2x a day (with non flouride toothpaste), teaching how to floss when old enough, not giving juice, not giving sweets, not going to bed with a bottle, etc.

Same for me!
Google it. It says it is more toxic than lead and slightly less toxic than arsenic. No thank you.
Additionally my ped told me it is a neuro toxin. She was relieved when I declined the vitamins. I guess by law she has to suggest them.

But you are investing the belching agents by keeping it on your teeth for x amount of time I just don't buy the fact flouridemis poisonous in the doses we are getting it. If it was we all would be dead by now. Fluoride is nothing new and had been around for years. If it was doing extreme harm we would all be showing signs of illness.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. And mine is that the poisonous hype is a bunch of BS.

On a toothpaste is clearly states: if more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, contact a Poison Control center right away.
To me it means more than a "pea size" . Kids use strawberry ( Tom's) or other flavored toothpastes and they use USUALLY too much and most of it they swallow because it tastes good.
I would not take a chance for my DC to swallow even a pea size, therefor he won't be using fluoride toothpaste or vitamins.
