Honey for cough?

I did a search on here for cough remedies and saw that a few ppl mentioned honey. Can you explain what you do? My 5 year old is coughing so much today and I know it's going to be bad tonight. Do I just give him honey, put some honey in some warm water? Or if you have any other suggestions I am open to anything! TIA

Yup, just on a spoon, I give DS a tspn when he has a cough. Helps coat the throat. I especially do it before bed as he tends to cough worse overnight.

not honey-related but there was a link here recently to a bunch of helpful parenting tips (from buzzfeed, i believe). One of the things said that if your child has a cough, you should put vicks vaporub on the bottom of their feet and then put socks on them before bedtime. It's supposed to sooth the cough within minutes.

I obviously never tried it but it's worth a shot. Hope it works out (if you go this very weird-sounding route)

Yep i use little cold's remedies version 'Honey Elixir' been using it for years now.. LOVE THE stuff.

I got a bottle for us and for my aunt's house and now SHE uses it for herself and swears by it. its not so thick or sticky but coats well. Since its honey i can give it as much as I need. I also make sure to give her water, tylenol if its a constant cough to reduce swelling and use the humidifier, cut milk/dairy and use vicks baby run on her chest.

I give a spoon of raw honey with lemon juice a few times a day. I find raw honey to work better than the kind they sell in grocery stores that are processed and heated. All of the enzymes, vitamins and nutrients are still in tact.

I also agree with putting Vicks on the feet and covering with socks.

i use zarbee's honey cough syrup. it usually helps DS. i've been doing the vicks on his feet, but don't feel that it's doing much. i'll try anythign since he and I have had terrible coughs for weeks now!

My ped suggests mixing honey with lemon juice, heating it in the microwave, then letting it cool and having your kid take a spoonful or two a few times a day.

Here is a good recipe :

MAGGIE’S COUGH REMEDY
¼ teaspoon Cayenne
¼ teaspoon Ginger
1 Tablespoon Cider Vinegar (an organic one, like Bragg’s, is preferred.)
2 Tablespoon Water
1 Tablespoon Honey (use a locally produced raw honey, if possible.)

We do regular honey followed by milk during the day, and Zarbees at night along with vicks and socks. It all helps and Zarbees makes a day and night version. I have only ever used the day and it works great even at night. If you have eucalypti oil you could burn that also.
