Baby food at 4 months? Is it really a bad idea?
Just looking to see other moms feelings. I know ultimately its a personal choice.

I started cereal at 4 months. No issues, she took very well to solds. For us it was great becasue she hated her formula so I has some peace of mind that she was getting calories and nutririon into her on top of the whopping 16-20 oz of formula she'd drink.

There is so much drama on this topic. My ped felt it was important to prevent allergies. The downside is that in formula fed babies, it correlates with obesity (thus, the recommendation by AAP).

Do you mean rather than BFing babies?

It’s really just practice at 4 months. They aren't going to eat enough to sustain themselves. They are getting all their nutrition from formula/breast milk.
I started at 4 months and he really seems to enjoy it. We started with vegetables. He even tries to pull the spoon towards his mouth. It’s very funny.
If your pediatrician is OK with it, then start and see what happens. Don't force the food on them though. . .should be a fun activity at this point.

DD started with pureed sweet potatoes. She was ready to eat, she would watch us eat and move her mouth like she was chewing, was able to sit unassisted for a little bit. We still gave her breast milk and formula.

Introducing solids at 4 months vs 6 months in FF babies correlated with increased obesity.
No difference in BF babies in terms of obesity.

You can always try a little to see how it goes. If the baby is not ready then stop. I did that when I introduced solids. I gave it a try and realized he wasn't ready. so I stopped and re-introduce it a few weeks later and he was fine.

I though the correlation was higher for babies starting younger than 4mnths? So much info is out almost makes you wacky!

If you are BF I would do a little research on 'the virgin gut'. I'm not an expert by any means, only being an aspiring mother.
That being said, I was eating rice cereal at 2 weeks old because 32oz of formula was not enough, and I have no food allergies or sensitivities.

My style of parenting is I go by my baby and not the books. There's lots of articles on AAP. What I've read were some key developmental cues. I got this from a website the AAP redirected me to:
Can your baby hold his head up?
Does he open his mouth and lean forward for the spoon.
Can he move the food from the spoon to the throat?
Is he at least 13lbs AND doubled birthweight (typically around 4 months)?
I was able to answer yes to all of this, so I did start with cereals and eventually veggies then fruit.
Yes there is a correlation between early feeding and obesity but I never forced or overly encouraged DD to eat and once she's done, she's done.
Talk to your ped, read some websites, and read your baby. Then you can make the best decision for you and baby. Good Luck!! Have fun!!!

Note that the aap says nothing about allergies, obesity etc.It is pure mechanics. If you have a family history of allergies, I'd check with your ped but untilmately its up to you.

My pediatrician is against starting solids before 6 months, so that's when I started. I also just read an article in the May issue of "Parents" that to reduce a child's risk of asthma, if you start food at 4 months, stick to 1 tablespoon of purees a day (not sure why).

My ped. said day one give 3 baby spoons, day two give 4 baby spoons and day three give 5 baby spoons. Test out all the vegetables and fruits before you give more.
5 baby spoons is about 1 tablespoon, which equals .5 ounce.

I started both boys @ that age - cereal, then frutis/veggies. - Both are forumula fed.

I started with rice cereal. 1 tablespoon cereal with 5 tablespoons formula / breastmilk. (we use formula). She hardly ate anything... most of it ended up on her face!
ETA: It was also so liquidy it really just looked like slightly thicker formula to me.
And I didn't feed her everyday. If she seemed like she needed more than the bottle then I'd give some cereal. First few weeks was definitely more play for her.
Oh and at about 5 months DD got sick; double ear infection and croup. Her appetite went way down so I stopped any solids until she was feeling better. She was only eating a small serving once a day if that but I didn't want it interfering with her formula and hydration. The Dr said I did the right thing because it's the formula that's most important nutritionally.

I started cereal and Stage 1 baby foods with my DD at 4 months.......she had zero issues with it. Looooved everything, chewed well, etc. She was ready for many reasons though.
