Beating myself up and a babyproofing Q?

I can't stop thinking about this morning. I am neurotic and, at times, is that person who says "how can that parent be so stupid?". I was that parent this morning. I thought I was doing a good job keeping DD safe, healthy, happy and well fed. This morning I came out of the bathroom, peeked in her room and saw the cord from the monitor camera in her crib. We had it tacked against the wall to try and prevent this and she somehow got it. It was wrapped around her. She is fine. I am horrified. I feel like I failed with something so basic.

I just wanted to see what you guys do to babyproof. Are there any things that may not seem obvious but are a good-to-do? Any things that are a must? Thanks.

All I do is outlet covers and cabinet locks for the lower cabinets.

That's it. I don't want to go over board. I want to be able to teach my DS about dangers and staying away and not rely on safety products. Yes people will call me crazy but my DS stays away from the stove cause we have taught him hot. He now will say hot and stay away from other things that he feels heat from.

I'm a big believer in baby proofing, depending on your kid.

With DD, we wouldn't have needed to do anything. DS though is like Denis the Menace.

We did all outlet covers (replace with those that slide and cover the holes), furniture straps (to prevent furniture from tipping), TV strap (without this, our flat screen would have been broken by now), gate at top of stairs (screwed into floor and wall), lock at top of stairs to basement, lock at top of stairs to garage, radiator covers, hooks for venetian blind cords & cabinet locks.

We don't have any cords around the cribs.

We don't have anything hung over the cribs.

We also removed our BIG standing lamps.
