Zantac- spitting up question
I'm so frustrated and feel so bad for my son. He started spitting up with almost every bottle last month. took him to Dr and they put him on Zantac 2x a day. Been doing that and not much better, so they upped it to 3x a day but he's still spitting up. Also been very gassy. He's on the Similac Sensitive formula. Anyone go through this or have any suggestions?

I could have written your post, word for word. We took DD off Zantac because we didn't see a difference when she was taking it. We tried a million formulas, including Nutramigen. We switched peds and the new one recommended stopping Nutramigen and going back to regular formula, either Similac Sensitive or Gentlease. DD was an olympic spitter-upper on Sensitive, so she's on Gentlease. She still spits up, but not nearly as much as she did. Her doctor also put us at ease, pointing out that babies spit up but as long as she's gaining weight, not to worry.
ETA: DD takes about 5oz at each feeding. We burp her 3x during the course of each bottle because of her gas.

Our DD was also put on Zantac and we stopped it as well. She spit up even more with it and didn't seem any more comfortable while taking it. She seems better now and only spits up occasionally. She is on Similac Isomil Soy. She drinks 4 oz every 3 hours.

Reflux meds only decrease the stomach acids and keeps them from rising and irritating the linking of the esophagus. It has no effect on the amount of spit up they produce. I'm pretty sure spitting up is related to the sphincter which is not effected by meds.

She eats about every 3 hours.
Mutty is right about Zantac not cutting back on spitting up. We took her off because she didn't seem more comfortable on it and our Dr didn't think she had reflux.

I'm thinking about taking him off of it also, cuz I don't see it doing anything for him. I just called the doc and left a message, so I"ll see if they recommend anything else.

I would try changing formula. I put my dd on alimentum and she was rx zantac 3 times a day. Once i changed formula i had a whole new baby.

This! Zantac should help the acid reflux, but won't have an effect on the amount of spit up. DS just starting spitting up a lot when he turned 8w. His gatro said he'll just outgrow the spitting up, and as long as he doesn't seem like he's in pain, not to worry.

This! Zantac should help the acid reflux, but won't have an effect on the amount of spit up. DS just starting spitting up a lot when he turned 8w. His gatro said he'll just outgrow the spitting up, and as long as he doesn't seem like he's in pain, not to worry.
That's exactly what My doc said yesterday. He's gaining weight and doesn't seem to be bothered by it, so he will be fine. It's prob more me then him bothered by this lol. Thanks girls!
