first time potty trainer - help!
So DS will be 3 next month. Over the last 6 months or so, he has gone on the potty every now and then, with some frequency the past 2-3 months (once per day, once every other day both pee and BMs).
I know he is very ready since he is waking up dry 50% of the time and lets us know when he IS going. With a new baby in the house I was not going to push anything until he turned three but since he is waking up totally dry much more often now and he will sit and fill the potty  first thing in the AM, NOW is the time.
How do I do this? Right into pull-ups? Pull-ups only for naps? He is at daycare all day and they are amazing, will do whatever we want I just need some direction.
Do we ask him at a certain interval to sit? Like every 60 mins? If he says he doesn't have to go - do we still MAKE him sit? Any help, ideas, insight would be very much appreciated.

I trained him 3 months before his 3rd bday. He was ready before but I also had just given birth to a new baby at the time so I didn;t do anything. I went cold turkey & winged it. I did not use pull ups at all. I bought him a few different fun character undies. When he woke up one morning, I told him that starting today, he will pick his own undies & that we do not have anymore diapers. I took him to the toilet & told him if he made peepee, I would give him a surprise. I had an m&m for him & a new hotwheels car. He did great! For the rest of the day, he would go by himself & not even tell us. He pretty much trained himself in 1 day.
For naps, I made him go to the bathroom right before & there weren't any issues.

thanks!! did he ever wake to go during naps or in the middle of the night? We have a potty in his room, just wondering if I should expect that he would go on his own during naps or night?

His naps aren't even 2 hours, so he never woke. The first week or two, I did wake him very early in the am to go pepee after I fed the baby his bottle. Around 4:30am & then put him back to bed. Good luck!

i recommend the 3 day potty training if you can do it. Baiscally you got straight to underwear even at night and nap time. DD was trained in 3 days but at night she wasnt and still isnt so after about two months i put her in pull ups for night time. she does not wake up dry and she still doesnt. since your DS waked up dry most of the time you may have more success at night

DS was doing the same thing as your DS. I had read the 3 day potty training but wasn't ready to wake DS up in the middle of the night for potty breaks so I used pull ups for naps and overnight. After about two weeks of him consistently waking up dry and showing that he was able to hold it, I did away with them for naps and then a week later for overnights too. The only time he's ever had an accident overnight was when I gave him Benadryl for an allergic reaction he had. Good luck!

As soon as DD was waking up dry, put her right in undies, day and night. She had maybe 3 daytime accidents and 2 nightime accidents from age 2 1/2. She is now almost 7. We had a poop issue for a week, wouldn't go. I amost caved and put her back in a diaper just to go but the doc said don't do it. It was definately hard to see her in pain. Once she finally went, didn't have much of a problem. She would try to hold it in once in awhile but eventually just went.

Going through something similar with dd. she is ready but with the new baby I am not. About a month ago I started noticing she was dry a lot during the day and waking up dry. I started having her go on the potty and she will go and be dry almost all day but I have to be the one that remembers she doesn't tell me. I have hernia a pull up most days because it is easier to take her to the potty with a pull-up rather than a diaper.
IMO when you are ready I would just go to full time underwear and check out the 3 day method everyone talks about..that is my plan when things calm down a bit!

DS has been trained for at least 18 months and there are still nights where he wakes up between 3 and 5 a.m. to pee.
Daycare really worked to train him. I didn't think he was ready so I wasn't pushing the issue at home. I think seeing his friends use the potty and getting rewards (mini marshmallows) helped. Once he started peeing on the potty, he did really well with it. Within a few days of him first peeing on the potty, daycare suggested sending him in underwear. He was trained pretty quickly although he seemed to do better at daycare than at home. It took a little longer to poop train, but I think he was fully trained, including being night trained, within a month.

I chose aw weekend we were going to be home. Fri after nap I said no more diapers and that was that. She went pee and poop. I did put a diaper on her that first night but no after that.
I was on top of her all day sat and sun. I barely left her side and dh was home also. I would ask her constantly. And wait for her signs. Holding herself, dancing etc.
We had a few small accidents. Starting going but finished in the potty and 1 big accident on the floor. Other wise she went. She got anxious the second day and was a little scared but we got through it and she was fine after that. She's been trained for about 2 months and only had 3 night accidents. I never woke her to go. She woke up a few times to go. I just make sure no liquids after 6 ish and go before bed.
Good luck. She w as trained in 21/2 days.
