Autism: the plausible cause no one is talking about

If you have an extra hour to spare, listen to this discussion about a plausible cause for autism as well as many other developmental disorders. I think this woman is right on the money. While I do believe there are some cases (very few) of vaccine induced autism, I think the majority of cases are caused by pre-conception/pre-natal environmental toxin exposure.

In a nutshell, pre-conception/pre-natal exposure to environmental toxins (ie. Pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides, hormone treatment, endocrine disruptors, etc.) can cause genetic mutations in your unborn fetus' germ line to the extent that their children may be born with a neurological or developmental disorder.

So if anyone plans to have more children in the future, do the best that you can to eat a nutrient dense diet before conception and during pregnancy. I know many times we use the excuse of being pregnant to eat junk, but what we eat during our pregnancy can affect our grandchildren. Same goes for limiting your chemical exposure. Okay, that's my unsolicited advice for today. Chat Icon

Re: Autism: the plausible cause no one is talking about

I will check out the link later but I remember you posting on another thread about this, and diet makes a great deal of sense to me.

Especially if you think about how our grandparents ate back in the day vs. now.

I also got hazed on here for mentioning this once before, but I have a friend who works with autistic kids for a living, and a lot of the kids she has seen, the parents have done fertility treatments to get pregnant.

Not looking to start drama by posting such a thing, but it is definitely something that had made ME stop and think. (Note: I am not saying I am for/against fertility treatments or feel they make people have children with disabilities).

My own son has had some issues (attention, sensory) and I admit I did not eat very healthy at all at times during my pregnancy.

At the same time, it could still be genetic too because a lot of people in his family have similar stuff ;).

Autism: the plausible cause no one is talking about

i will check out this link, but i have to say, i followed the book with DS, ate right, avoided what i was "harmful" or not healthy, and basically lived by how the books said to.. well guess what.. DS is autistic. i noticed at 6 months he was diagnosed officially at 18, started EI at 15 months.

with DD i said eff it.. i did what i wanted, and guess what, she is totally NT

i did use Clomid with DS, but so did a LOT of ppl i know and their child is totally NT.

I totally 100% agree with this. I really think that its not just what we do to our bodies while pregnant but the many years prior including using recreational drugs in some cases.

I don't know what to think, really. I know TONS of family and friends who've done ivf/fertility treatments and their kids are totally normal kids. On the other hand the people I know who have autistic kid(s) didn't do fertility treatments. I think where the fertility argument comes in is because a lot of the time older women do fertility txs. Older mothers have an increased risk of having a child with autism, as well as an older father.

I think if you're breathing in pesticides/herbicides/toxins/etc, yes, I believe your risk goes way up. Same with eating gmos. It's really hard these days though, because literally EVERYTHING causes autism. It's sad because lots of women have taken progesterone, estrogen etc. should the children of these women not have kids now? There's nothing they can do now to prevent it from what this woman is saying.

You just never know. Anti depressants, anti anxiety meds, clomid, IVF drugs, recreational drugs, diet, pollution levels, steroidal drugs, hormone treatments, men's sperm quality, too many ultra sounds, I've heard it all! we have no clue how any of these affect people long term.

I have to say I did everything right with both of my pregnancies.....ate right never drank or even ate sushi (which I craved). I hardly drank soda. The only thing I didn't do much was exercise. My first daughter is autistic and my younger one is typical. IMO, i don't believe vaccines had anything to do with it. Environmental? I lived by a highway but I think that is even stretching it. Maybe a chromosomal mutation? Possibly

Same, although not so healthy on the 2nd child, and she is NT.

I have never done a single drug, smoked ciggarettes, pot, etc. Many of the men and male children on my dad's side of the family have issues. I believe it's genetics, at least in our case.

I always wonder about the 'waves' all around us
Microwaves. Cell phones. Wireless stuff.
And the antibiotics we took when we were younger
Vaccines we had when we were younger
Water supply and contamination

Man I make myself such a wreck...

Bottom line is you can't make yourself neurotic. If you want to live on a mountain in seclusion go for it. But this is our life and our home. Do your best, do what you feel is right and pray that someone up there knows what he's doing

Having worked with MANY family systems for YEARS professionally, I too think genetics play a HUGE role.

Although I can still certainly get on board that if you add that along with diet/drugs/etc., that maybe that can also increase one's chances.

Sadly too, I think random things just happen and we are not going to know the reason, as cliché as that sounds or as much as we try to reach for answers.

I wholeheartedly believe its genetics.

You can do ivf, take anti-depressants, eat gmo and inorganic foods, drink soda throughout your pregnancy, take hormones and have your lawn sprayed with chemicals and not have a child with autism. It's not in your genetics.

You can eat clean, live in a bubble, not take a single medication, breathe in zero chemicals, take zero hormones and have a child with autism. It's in your genetics.

Re: Autism: the plausible cause no one is talking about

I work in the autism field. I have no thoughts on what causes it, I really don't. I am also currently pregnant, and I am taking two medications for the duration of my pregnancy.

My main concern with this possible explanation (not the diet part, per se, but absolutely the pharmaceuticals piece), is that as with vaccines this could cause fear and panic and lead women to refuse medications that keep them safe during pregnancy. I wanted to not take ANY meds during my pregnancy because it felt weird to me. But I have high blood pressure. I NEED to be on medication to control it. If this explanation is true or gains momentum, there may be women who won't take medication out of fear of having a child with a disability. That, to me, is scary.

Re: Autism: the plausible cause no one is talking about

I truly believe it us related to genetics. I did IVF with my first DS & even had to have an MRI during pregnancy for him & he is fine. My second DS was conceived naturally & he's fine. I did not eat the healthiest, took meds & had sonograms more often then most.

My nephew who was conceived naturally, SIL ate extremely healthy during pregnancy, took not even a tylenol while pregnant & he was diagnosed at 2 with autism. It is however in my SIL bloodline (2 cousins have it or on spectrum)

But there is NO SUCH thing as a genetic epidemic!!!! Autism is now an epidemic, and I do NOT belive it is better diagnosing. Maybe gentics have some part of it, in terms of some may be more susceptible than others.
Our environment and food is so filled with garbage it is pathetic.

Autism: the plausible cause no one is talking about

I honestly don't know what to think. I think it is a combination of genetics, environment, and better diagnosis. Twenty five years ago my cousin was written off as having "issues", given tons of meds and thrown in a hospital. To this day he has still not been diagnosed with anything officially. I know of three other people who have never been diagnosed and were either given medication, or not treated at all. I don't think that is the only cause of the rising cases but I have seen with my own eyes how much we have evolved in treating/diagnosing those with special needs. It just makes me so sad to think of those like my cousin who were never given a fair chance.

I do think it's a combination of things, but there is also a much higher rate of diagnosis, and a LOT of misdiagnosis. We have so many children in my preschool who come in with an ASD diagnosis who are not truly on the spectrum. They may have severe language delays, may be cognitively impaired, etc, but are not actually on the spectrum. By the same token, there are children who many years ago would have simply been labeled MR who are actually on the spectrum. So it works both ways. Some better diagnosing, and some overdiagnosis. There are a lot of children who are diagnosed with ASD at a young age in order to make it easier for them to get services as well. My experience working with this population has led me to believe that there is a genetic link, but I also believe that there is some environmental factor that plays a role.

My nephew is servely autistic and some doctors that my sister took him too that are top in the field of research think it may be related to my sister being bite by a lyme tick while pregnant. There is actually a whole study out that is called"LIA" Lyme induced autism

I've heard this too & my.SIL whos an advocate for special needs children especially the autism spectrum says a lot of the ASD gets put on a child early on.bc the intervention is so strict to get these days. Some will take the diagnosis so they get the intervention.

I don't have time to watch the video but from the comments, is the woman basically saying many different things are the cause of autism? Isn't that the general consensus these days?
