LIE Closed on Sunday, 2/10
I got a codered email and text today from the Suffolk County Fire Rescue Office of Emergency Management.
2/9/2013 8:07:02 PM EST - Suffolk County Fire Rescue Office of Emergency Management is advising motorists that the Long Island Expressway will be closed in both directions from exit 57 to exit 73 on Sunday February 10. The closure will be in effect from 7 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. for snow removal.

abandoned cars from rush hour.needing to get cleared....... the signs thursday night on the Meadowbrook said avoid travel in PM on Friday. People didnt listen.......
otherwise would have been easy to plow without having to rescue cars

and Lets not forget teachers. Since the schools weren't closed.
And if they couldn't get to some of the main roads. Why weren't they clearings the secondary roads or the service roads.

And I just need to say- why are we blaming the people on the roads? Many of which had no choice.
Maybe if the freaking towns and counties had gotten AHEAD of this storm, people wouldn't be stuck and stranded and abandoning their cars.
Why weren't plows out earlier?
I drove from exit 55 to exit 61 on Friday evening and did not see ONE plow out there.
Not one.
Why were they waiting for it to get bad?
This storm was no suprise as mentioned.
We were told to prepare as mentioned.
Why weren't the towns and counties prepared like we were supposed to be?
To me, the response was disgraceful.
They knew they couldn't handle more than a foot of snow- they should have been out earlier clearing roads as it was coming down to stay ahead of it.
The LIE is a major highway- to see the condition it is east of exit 57- 2 days later- is disgraceful.

Agreed. The Governor should have mandated that every non-emergency business, incuding schools, should be closed early, by 12; or they should have closed all together. The thing is, even though many people left work early, they still got stuck! Once again, NY was vastly underprepared.

I don't know who's responsible for plowing the LIE but as I was headed home around 4:00 on Sunrise (Holbrook to Bohemia area) I saw several plows and salt trucks on Sunrise and the service drive.

Exactly! I've been saying this since Friday. WHY weren't they out sanding the roads before and sanding and salting during the storm.
Granted I had my head in the sand for this. But I'm not runinng the town or the county.
Ridiculous.

This was the problem- while places out east and further north on LI were starting to get slammed, people further west and south just had rain, so places, like my job, waited until after 3 to close. When I left work in Melville at 3:20, there was a dusting. I barely had to clean off my car. But everyone else and their mother was trying to get home at the same time. I live off of exit 59 and it took almost 3 hours to get home. The further east I went, the worse it got. With no one moving on the road, people were just getting out of their cars to wipe off the snow that had accumulated on their windows and wipers. My wipers that had been on continuously ended up covered in snow and ice bc we were just sitting in the LIE parking lot! Plows had definitely plowed parts of the LIE during that time bc people, including cops who had pulled over were trapped in the shoulder from the plowed snow.

ITA! Teachers in the city who left work at 3 were getting stuck. How is it their fault? Bloomberg should be blamed for not releasing early, if anyone

Also, the snow was falling at 2,3,4 inches an hour, for hours... there just isn't enough manpower to keep up with that... then with people stuck and the the plows not being able to get through - it just compounded the problem.

My husband is from upstate and the plows are sitting ready to get moving as soon as the snow starts. That's what should be done here when we have big storms coming in. I will admit here on SI DSNY did a great job, but we did get less than most of LI.

LI should take lessons from them on handling snow storms

I think you like to live in a fantasy land where you expect sayings like 'if they were more prepared, all of the streets would be plowed' to be true. If you went out to shovel every time your driveway was covered, how hard would it be for you to stay on top of the job? You would be out there constantly. That is what they are doing and they have more than just a driveway. I think they have done a tremendous job getting streets cleared.
BTW...I would have to imagine that plowing a grid, such as NYC, is a lot easier than plowing the streets on LI.

I hear what both of you are trying to say, but I think overall this storm (and how it was handled) was different.
In previous storms, you saw trucks working before, during, after. I understand that they were pulled from it during the thick of it, but there seems to be a lack of sand/salt and preparedness. Also, I read that some of the equipment couldn't even keep up with how much snow we got. I just hope all the little issues we had this time can be corrected for next time.
Something just feels really....behind schedule? I'm not sure of the correct word to convey what I mean.
I don't fault the drivers; I know they are just doing their job - but it feels like the ball was dropped somewhere for certain parts of LI.
I recall other storms where plows were up and down streets multiple times.
But hey, I could be wrong. I feel like I'm not in touch with the world at all, being as I'm still stuck in my house and my street has yet to be plowed.
Just going by what I'm hearing...and I don't think I ever waited this long for a plow to come through.
I am glad the main roads are getting cleared.
I understand it's important to be patient...just wish there were more information available.
...I say this all in peace, by the way. I'm already cranky over the snow.

And for the record, how can you say they did a TREMENDOUS job when the LIE- which the last I checked is a major state highway - no? Is STILL not plowed 2 days later?
