Washing NB clothes vs. 0-3/3m

So I just sorted through all of the baby clothes we got at the shower and have been buying and I have a ton of 0-3/3m stuff and that I plan on taking the tags off and washing this weekend... but what about the NB sized stuff?? Some of it looks so tiny,

Obviously I have no idea how big this baby is going to be even if we estimate off of his last growth sono so I don't know if I should wash it all or wash just a few things to bring to the hospital in case he's under 8lbs and then do the rest if we need it after we get home. The clothes are so small they could all fit in one wash so it's not like it would kill me to do it when I get home... what are you doing??

i washed some of my LO NB clothes because we are being told she is a peanut.. plus most of it i didn't buy and have no receipt for and i have no idea where it came from so i just washed it.
but if you have receipts, wash a few items and keep the tags on the others. you can always exchange it in a month or so once the baby starts to outgrow its current clothes

Washing NB clothes vs. 0-3/3m

My daughter was born at 6lbs 12oz and she wore NB for at least 2mths. When she came home from the hospital the 0-3mths was so big on her.

My daughter was a healthy size, 7.14 and she was in newborn for about 2 months. She was bf so it took a bit longer for her to gain, but the 0-3 months stuff was so so big! I actually went out and bought newborn stuff when she was 2 weeks old because the other stuff looked silly.

I wouldn't go crazy washing the NB stuff. DS was 8lbs at birth and outgrew his NB clothes by 3 weeks.

My DS was 8lbs5oz and 19.5" at birth and was in NB clothes for a good 6 weeks. I would wash all 0-3m and a couple of NB items. You could always either wash or exchange the clothes once your LO is here.

ETA: He was BF as well, so he wasn't gaining weight quickly.

This is what I did. I had so much NB. I returned or exchanged what I could and the rest with no tags I just kept and washed. I bought only a few one piece sleep things since I didn't really have but that was it. I have a ton of 0-3 n 3 month stuff that I washed but again mostly given from the shower

I returned all NB Stuff and only washed 0-3 months. DS was 7lb 11 oz and was only in 0-3 months for a few weeks.

Re: Washing NB clothes vs. 0-3/3m

My girls were in nb for at least 2 mo but they came home at 5-1 and 5-7. Id wash a few things because they will fit up to 8/9 lb but you might only get a week or 2 out of them. Even if you have some washed and you need them for awhile then you can wash more when you come home. I had a cs and one home and was running to the nicu to see the other and I still had time to wash some clothes. It's not as bad as you think it will be and you will have time once the baby comes home. You dont need erything SO prepped ahead of time.

My titny tot ws 6lbs 2oz(3weeks early) when she was born. I ebf and she was able to wear nb sizes to almost 3 months.

IMO I wouldn't take the tags off anything until your lo is here. I don't know how long you plan on staying home but they really only need to be in a onesie or footy. As a first time mom washing clothes with a nb was a piece of cake.

Re: Washing NB clothes vs. 0-3/3m

My kids were 7.15 and 7.16, they wore NB for a couple of weeks. You'll even find that some 0/3 clothes are the size of NB clothes, it's weird.

If you don't have many NB clothes, wash them, and just make sure they get on baby first.Chat Icon

Or, you can wait till the first day to wash them, you'll have laundry to do that day anyway. lol

DD was 8lbs and I used 0-3 month stuff. I used the footie PJs when she was a newborn and they were a little big but I didn't have to worry about the clothes rubbing against her cord.

It's hard to say because babies are born different weights and lengths and gain weight/get taller at different paces. My first was born 7 7. Camehome 6 14 and was in newborn clothes 6-8 weeks. My second was born 7 5 and came home 7lbs. Then she gained quickly and was in newborn only about 3 weeks. Except for really ttall babies, id think you would at least get a fee weeks of newborn clothes in.

We did a load of laundry the day we got home from the hospital.

I had only washed the Newborn stuff that I would not be able to return, just in case.

DD was 7 pounds 8 oz and needed the newborn, so I washed the rest of it, along with some other sheets, blankets, etc and the stuff we had with us at the hospital.

She is 2 weeks old now and the 0-3 months is still big but I am using it anyway. I didn't want a lot of newborn stuff that she would only use for such a short time.

I think I have about 7-8 total newborn outfits.

Re: Washing NB clothes vs. 0-3/3m

DS came home at 7lb 12oz and wore newborn stuff for about 3 weeks. at 1 month he is 23 inches tall so a lot of the pants are way too short on him, so hes been wearing 0/3-3mo clothes. The nb oneies still fit him though.

Dd was born 7.15 and wore NB for about a month

0-3 stuff is still big on her but her legs are a little long for the NB sleepers. NB onsies and pants still fit her.

I say leave the tags on for now. Thats what we did, just washed a load of the NB stuff when I got home from the hospital.

dd was 7lbs 15oz at birth and wore newborn sizes for about a month. and honestly, she only needed to move up to 0-3 because of her length and she was almost 10lbs at that point.

I gave the NB clothes to my mom to wash after the baby was born and we knew how much she weighed. Turns out I never needed newborn size - she would have worn it for like a week - so I'm glad I didn't take the tags off. My growth sono was only about 4-5oz off.

And just because you BF doesn't mean your baby will gain weight slowly, so don't count on that. I EBF and DD ate gained very quickly, and grew very fast as a newborn.

I only had a few nb sleep and play outfits ready when dd was born. I figured she'd be in 0-3 mo within a week or two. Well, she ended staying in the nb clothes for about 5-6 weeks and between spitting up and accidents, I went through a few outfits each day. Luckily, a friend lent a bunch of nb clothes and I picked up a few more outfits after she was born. You never know, so it's good to have them on hand (maybe with tags on)!

My son was a premie at 6 lbs. he wore premie for about a week, o-3 for less than a month and more than doubled his birthweight by the time he was 3 months old...I EBF him...every baby is different

I would put what you like to the side in size order and return what you dont like/think you need. You'll be doing laundry very often :) I would get a pack of LS onises for each size NB, 0-3, 3-6 months and start with those

...they live in a onsie and a blanket the first few months anyway unless your going out (which wont be too often in the beginning if you are BFing for the first time. between nursing and pumping that baby will be naked on your boob for about 12 of the 24 hrs. in the beginning :)

Congrats and Good Luck!!

Chat Icon this cracked me up.

I have LS and SS onesies ready to go, I washed those with all of the bedding and blankets etc bc I figured I would use them no matter what... but I think I am going to take most people's advice and like you said put aside anything I'm not in love with in the NB size and if we don't use it and I don't like it I'll exchange it. I have MOST of the gift receipts so it shouldn't be too much of a pain.

I'll just wash a few for the hospital and then anything else I can throw in the wash when we get home.

Thanks everyone!!!
