Child Aviation Restraint System

Has anyone ever used a Child Aviation Restraint System (CARES) to fily with your toddler? DS will be 18 months when we fly. Just wondering if it is worth it to buy instead of lugging careseat through the airport. I will be traveling with my sister, DS and my 3 neices so I am not sure will all our stuff that carrying a carseat will work out. TIA!

You don't need a carseat on the plane. Just buckle them in the seat belt. Check the carseat if you need it for your destination. I don't think CARES can be used for take off and landing, so I would check that before you buy it.

If the plane is going down, the carseat likely isn't going to do much good.

Yes, my niece uses it (5 yrs old). She is so tiny she can't just use the lap belt b/c she'll slip right out. Works great. No problems using it.

Re: Child Aviation Restraint System

Just FYI_ You can't use the car seat during takeoff and landing and it has to be stowed, so often that option is more trouble than it's worth.

Most of the people I work with stick to the seatbealt. Will he have his own seat or be a lap infant?

I have checked with the airline and you can use both the car seat and the CARES system at all phases of the flight. I want it mostly to keep him snugly trapped in his seat lol. He is very active and I just feel like the lap belt will not stop him from squirming out. I am going to get him his own seat because I will be 7 months preggo when we fly and I don't think either of us would be comfortable with him on my lap.

What?!?!?!

I'm not sure where you got this information, but it is 100% incorrect. 100% FALSE.

It is ENCOURAGED that you use the child restraint during the entire flight, including take off and landing. FAA rules allow it, and the majority of car seats sold also have an FAA certification on it. FAA, NTSB, AAP all actually encourage use of a car seat on a plane, stating that it may be used on a plane. ANY SEAT WHICH HAS AN FAA STICKER CAN BE INSTALLED AND USED ON A PLANE FOR THE ENTIRE TRIP.

CARES harnesses can be used for takeoff and landing.

The only seat which can not be used on a plane in a booster seat. This is because planes only have a lap belt. Boosters are used to "boost" a child up so an adult 3 point seat belt fits properly. They also will not have an FAA certification lable.

Why use a restraint on a plane?

Turbulence is the biggest reason that it is suggested to use a car seat.

I have always used my kids' carseats on planes. Several different airlines too.

I have the CARES system and like it a lot. A lot of times we have a carseat waiting for us at our destination so we don't have to bring it with us. Many times I'm flying alone as well so it's just easier.

Since your DC is 18 mos, I would recommend either the CARES or the carseat approach if they have their own seat. The regular seatbelt will not keep them restrained - they only get so tight.

You can use a carseat as well for the whole trip. There's no place to stow the carseat in the main cabin - except in the seat. The other options to travel with carseats are to gate check them as you board or check them with your luggage.

I do have a friend who uses the Gogo Kidz Travelmate and loves it. I also have another friend who bought a Cosco Scenera for travel since it's so lightweight (she also removed the latch connectors to make it lighter since she frequently travels alone and installs the seat with a seatbelt).

I just ordered the CARES, it seems way easier than the carseat. I ordered it from activeforever.com With the code EMM, it came to 55.09

I'm thinking she meant the CARES thing, not an actual carseat.

I think CARES used to not be able to be used for takeoff and landing? Or maybe I'm thinking of something else. The harness that attaches lap kids maybe?

As I stated above, CARES and FAA approved car seats can be used during the flght, take off and landing. There are no restrictions as to when they are used.

CARES is the only FAA approved harness and AFAIK has always been able to be used during the entire flight, including takeoff and landing.

You can use CARES for take off and landing, it's the only one approved by the FAA. All it is an upper body harness that attaches to the plane's seatbelt. I liked it since my DS is small - he could easily slide out of the seatbelt when he's supposed to be seated.

You can't use the other types of harnesses that attach the kid to you during take off or landing (or a carrier like the Bjorn).

Right, I see that now. I thought previously you couldn't, but obviously am mistaken for the other tether type things.

This is definitely NOT true. We have flown with DS 4 times and each time he has been in his own seat AND in his car seat for the entire flight, including take off and landing.
