One Million Moms for Gun Control
Hi Everyone, I recently became the Nassau County Chapter Leader for One Million Moms For Gun Control. This national organization was started the day after the tragedy at Sandy Hook. The organization is modeled after Moms Against Drunk Driving- in that it is about education the public and lobbying state and federal government for changes in legislation. We do not wish to ban all guns, but rather to end gun show loopholes, as well as ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines.
I, like many of you, could not get the images of those sweet, innocent children who were gunned down out of my head. I decided to do something about it. If you would like more information or would like to join the cause, then please visit my facebook page. It is One Million Moms for Gun Control- Nassau County or https://www.facebook.com/#!/OneMillionMomsForGunControlNyNassauCounty. Thanks!!

One Million Moms
Thanks for the info. I don't live in Nassau- I wonder if my area has a chapter leader. I live a half hour from Newtown so I'd be surprised if we didn't.

Re: One Million Moms
Is One Million Moms for Gun Control affiliated with the group that is just "One Million Moms"? I'm a bit leary of that group based on some of their other idealogy (most specifically apparent anti-gay rhetoric).. but I'm not certain that they are the same and would like to know more about the group if it is not the same!

From what I could see, I don't think so, but I only looked quickly. I'd never heard of One Million Moms but it took two seconds to spot their anti-gay slant. It would surprise me if a group with such a conservative slant would support gun control, but you never know!

I would like some more information also.. I also quoted you above and want to know what you mean by gun show loopholes?? I understand the ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, although if people all ready have them they are pre-ban so they would still be on the streets...

ABSOLUTELY NO AFFILIATION, ladies. They are modeled on the M.A.D.D. concept of making change. Here's a link to the national page,

Please please like the page. I got in there early, in the days following Newtown when I was just crying my eyes raw.
This organization is fantastic. Angry moms (and dads, and aunts & uncles, and cousins) who want SANE gun legislation.
Non-partisan, and not "gun-grabbers". Gun owners are on board too.
4 simple sane demands that Congress ACT on legislation now and save lives.
I joined the National page and a few NYC pages. I'll join the Nassau page too now!!!
If you're on twitter they're requesting you tweet using #1mm4GC today, Congress's FIRST DAY back in session.

Re: One Million Moms
Here's my $0.02.
I am not "anti-gun" a/k/a a gun grabber. They have their place, in a country built on a revolution, that is an inherent freedom to me. My DH HUNTS. So the idea that all gun control means repeal of 2nd amendment is quite frankly insane to me.
It's also the NRA script, built to fan fear and incite rage, as well as a NIFTY HANDY DANDY and utterly predictable run up in gun sales. And that is happening RIGHT now, if you care to research it. It happens after EVERY shooting atrocity in this country and the NRA and their benefactors (guns and ammo manufacturers) smile their evil grins and count their money.
NRA were once a venerable institution in this country. In their current iteration they are nothing but a bunch of legalized pimps, and their whore is the 2nd Amendment.
I am not anti-gun. I am ADAMANTLY anti-NRA.
Responsible gun owners ALL OVER THE COUNTRY by a wide margin have rejected them as well - 4.3 million members, yet more than 80 million gun OWNERS in this country should tell you something. They speak for no one but themselves, and push an agenda based on fear and discord - and for too long we've allowed them to set the agenda politically and legislatively. They are a nefarious lot.
Peruse their board. A rogues gallery if ever there was one. Why are these maniacs the de facto creators of public policy in this country? http://www.meetthenra.org/board-list

A little off topic, but a woman from Kansas posted on the page that you can own as many assault rifles as you want, but you can only own 4 cats. I did a quick search and found that in Wichita you can only have two cats and two dogs, and you need a special permit if you want to own up to 4 of each.

On the + side they are showing great leadership in tackling their assault cat problem. We suck if we can't change this shit.

yeah because guns dont need food water or can be beat and left out in the cold do die a miserable death. A gun can not be forced to live in its own feces and become diseased then pass that disease to other guns causing an outbreak. Guns dont break down fences, bite children on their own..
Most guns don't contain a wild animal brain in any way shape or form.
Could it be because guns are non living objects?
There SHOULD be a limit to animals for the safety of that animal and those around them.
A gun is just an object. It is the madmen behind the trigger you should limit not the object.
The animal vs gun logic is as flawed as the idea of banning cars because they cause drunk driving accidents. Its not the car but the driver.

Good! This is something I can get behind now that I know it's not affiliated with that other group. I DO think a name change might be a good thing to avoid confusion with a hate group in the future.
I'm definitely going to read more on what this group stands for! Thank you!

You're right, I should be concerned about the person who owns five cats and not stress at all about the person whose owns five assault rifles.
You can't compare guns and cars either. Transportation is the main purpose of a car. What is the main of a gun? If not to kill or harm, then what? Maybe I'm not that smart because I truly don't see why someone who's not law enforcement or military needs to own one.

You are either a fool or an NRA-apologist; whoops that's redundant.
The instant there is a car, or a cat, or a pool, or an airplane, or a bat or whatever NON INHERENTLY DANGEROUS OBJECT YOU WANT, whose SOLE purpose, only reason for existing, is to kill people with UTMOST EFFICIENCY (assault weapons & hicap ammo) I'll be all over it. For now I'm working on weapons that enable mass death.

Mrs Prof, the research supports you. Most gun owners support a new (and much improved) Assault Weapons Ban as well as closing the gunshow loophole.
For folks new to the issue, the best example of the gunshow mess I can give you is to google
ROBYN ANDERSON, COLUMBINE.
Read the story about this young girl, 18 at the time, and how she procured 3 of the 4 weapons used in the Columbine shooting. I will not point you to any articles in order to avoid influencing you.
That was 1999.
Virtually nothing has changed. We are a disgrace if we, and our elected officials, cannot change this. Now.

One Million Moms
In brief what the Gun Show Loophole is:
Current federal law requires criminal background checks only for guns sold through licensed firearm dealers, which account for just 60% of all gun sales in the United States. A loophole in the law allows individuals not “engaged in the business” of selling firearms to sell guns without a license—and without processing any paperwork. That means that two out of every five guns sold in the United States change hands without a background check.
Though commonly referred to as the “Gun Show Loophole,” the “private sales” described above include guns sold at gun shows, through classified newspaper ads, the Internet, and between individuals virtually anywhere.
Unfortunately, only six states (CA, CO, IL, NY, OR, RI) require universal background checks on all firearm sales at gun shows. Three more states (CT, MD, PA) require background checks on all handgun sales made at gun shows. Seven other states (HI, IA, MA, MI, NJ, NC, NE) require purchasers to obtain a permit and undergo a background check before buying a handgun. Florida allows its counties to regulate gun shows by requiring background checks on all firearms purchases at these events. 33 states have taken no action whatsoever to close the Gun Show Loophole.
Source: Coalition to Stop Gun Violence
ETA: If this doesn't scare the bejesus out of EVERYONE then I don't know what the hell would.
Basically, if you can get your ass into a gun show, you can buy a gun and NOT A SINGLE BACKGROUND CHECK will be done.
What was that about keeping the crazies away from the guns and that people kill people?
Well, how is this keeping the crazies away??
Good times!!!

You missed what I said.. it is as foolish meaning I agree.. you CANT compare them. *I* wasn't. I started the whole thing off with saying its flawed.
ETA: and altho i AGREE with you I have seen another sarcastic response (which I guess I should have quoted as sarcasm before I posted my last one) which was handheld lighters are automatic matches. Look, there's a lot of bs flying around that I find flawed. Guns dont compare to a match, a lighter, a drunk driver, or hording cats. They are GUNS. They have several uses and yes, i have said before NO ONE NEEDS A MACHINE GUN. I know this is sensitive as a subject but this is getting crazy that you are either 100% with one side or 100% with the other. I disagree with a lot of the stupidity going around to support the movement against ANY type of change to gun laws. Doing NOTHING isn't the answer. Do I fear we will lose our 2nd amendment, no. Do I think there may be overzealous actinos, possibly. Do I think hording cats is a questionable statement of why can't I have 10 cats but you can have 10 handguns is a way to make the point? NO, I dont.
So let me be 100% clear on where *I* stand.
In the middle.
I disagree with the abosolutely idiotic attempts to justify the stance of 'nothing you do will change all deaths' take on gun control.
I disagree that guns are the ONLY problem here and must be the first focus.
I agree mental health should be given even HALF of the passion that the gun drama has caused.
I agree doing nothing will solve nothing
I disagree that guns are the cause of death by themselves
I agree that some form of government needs to show more balls
I disagree its the federal govt
I disagree with laws based on passion without thought.
And I am NOT an NRA supporter or member.

Re: One Million Moms
1000 x infinity apologies Xelyndria.
I thoroughly misread your earlier post. And for that I am sorry. I've heard that impotent "analogy" too much over the past few weeks and I try to shoot it down at every opportunity. I am deeply sorry (and won't edit/delete so people can see the full discourse).
Your points are well-taken. And the "moderate" place, the place of COMPROMISE is exactly why I landed so firmly with the One Million Moms. Many many sane responsible people are there. Including gun owners. Including mental health advocates. Those 2 things BOTH need to be addressed to truly "solve" this problem to the degree that it is solvable. However, as part of a multi-disciplinary approach, it is imperative that gun legislation - most of which exists already, btw - be tightened up. A criminal background check system is fine, but it won't work unless the RECORDS BEHIND IT ARE being INPUTTED. And they are not - not consistently, not nationwide, and not effectively. Millions of guns are sold to exactly the WRONG people every year - and I mean LEGALLY. It's broken. We can fix it.
Mental health supports are ALSO broken. Very deeply broken. And they are a much longer (and much more expensive) road to fix. The infrastructure basically has to be rebuilt from the ground up, and it is addressed as part of this effort, but gun legislation can happen NOW and should not wait.
Sometimes the perfect is the enemy of the good, so we work on BOTH areas, and fix what we can - it's a low-hanging fruit thing. I cannot sit idly by while more kids are doomed to get shot up, and console myself afterwards with chest beating and candle-lighting. I simply will not do it.
