Breastfeeding and Dieting...

Any advice here or words of wisdom? I am almost 11 weeks PP and want to slowly work at losing the last 10-12lbs but am worried about milk supply (I EBF). Is it true if you lose too fast your supply suffers? I definitely see a difference in DD's nursing when I eat a big meal vs. small meal. i.e. if I eat a big dinner, I am leaking like crazy in the morning and I notice DD gulping a lot more than usual. So I just want to be mindful of my meals and def don't want to skimp. I don't have an oversupply of milk, I seem to make just enough for her.

Anyway here is what I am doing for now - I am working out 4x a week (30-40 min) and counting calories and allowing 500 extra as per a calculator I found online. So 1700-1800 calories a day. I did this for 2 weeks and saw no change. Maybe I am just impatient??!? I know it takes time.

What did you ladies do and was your supply ok? How long should I expect it will take to get the rest of the weight off? I was very active and fit most of my pregnancy and do usually make healthy choices. Overall I feel good about my body right now but want to get back in shape by the spring - if possible!

Honsetly when I found I watched what I ate, my milk supply dropped. You have to really eat and DRINK A LOT - but healthy things. I found the more I ate all day (and tried to keep it fruit and veggies often) the more milk supply I had and slowly the weight fell off quicker and quicker - by 5 months I was pretty much back to pre-pregnancy weight

I also found when I started to cut calories that my supply dropped a ton. If you are EBF I wouldn't diet now. Wait it out a little bit more, I noticed when DD started solids around 7 months that it was easier to count calories and drop weight.

I agree with everyone else, when I dieted my supply took a hit.

Re: Breastfeeding and Dieting...

I remember feeling the same way. Honestly, whenever I tried to loose any weight my supply took a hit. I am e pumping so I was really able to monitor how much I was making. Eventually, everything came off and I was able to eat what ever I wanted. I'm in the process of weaning and am now concerned about gaining weight back because I have become so accustom to eating what ever I want.

Re: Breastfeeding and Dieting...

If I try to diet I lose my milk supply. If I eat healthy and drink lots of water I don't. But I will say with my two older kids I did not lose the last 10lbs until they weaned. My body held onto those pounds for dear life.

Re: Breastfeeding and Dieting...

Great advice girls thank you. I want to BF for 1 yr if I can so it is #1 to keep my supply. I think I will keep up my workouts and just keep making healthy choices.

Also another question - when you dieted did you eat the extra calories and you still had a problem?

I've tried dieting (DD is almost 8 months) & whenever I do my supply drops. I even tried weight watchers plan for breast feeding moms. Supply still dropped. I gues I'm doomed to be chubby until DD weans. Stinks but I would do anything for DD so if being a chubby for a little longer is in the cards, then so be it lol. Once she weans its on like donkey kong!!! Chat Icon

Not a good idea, your supply will drop.
Just work out and eat healthy, that' the best you can do right now. They do say weight comes off faster when you BF so who knows, some women say they gained more.

I'm EBF (11 weeks pp) and doing WW. I haven't noticed any difference in my supply but I'm not sure how one notices that??? I need to lose just under 30 lbs, though, so that's a big difference from needing to lose 10.

I'm happy to read this because I know my body very well and that whole "breastfeeding takes the pounds off" is definitely going to be a myth for me.

This. With both of my DC I did not diet until I stopped BF. I felt that EBF was the only nutrition they were getting and it was ony as good as what I was eating. I didn't eat junk but, I ate a wide variety of food groups and nutrients etc. and never cut calories. I just tacked it on to pregnancy in my mind...

Re: Breastfeeding and Dieting...

I didn't "diet" per se....I just watched what I ate, snacked healthy, & watched portions & by 4 or 5 months I was at or below my pre-preg size. I had no issue with milk supply & I exclusively BF, & BF for 1 year.
