TV & iphone addict!

I was so against TV in the beginning but once in a while I would let DD watch it so I could shower or cook. Same thing with my phone but now she wants it all the time.
She is obsessed with Mickey mouse clubhouse, looking at pictures on my phone & an app I have for her.
I guess in moderation it's ok but she screams for Mickey or the phone A LOT !
When I'm home with her it's not too bad because I just don't turn the TV on but DH always has it on & so does my in laws & pretty much everywhere she goes.
I'm almost thinking of getting her a leap pad or one of things so she will stop using my phone but she's only 16 months & so many studies say that it's not good for them & has no educational value.
I don't want to start a TV debate, but I'm wondering how other parents feel about letting them watch TV, using their phones & buying them tablets that are made for them.

Re: TV & iphone addict!

DS is the same way about my kindle fire! he has the cutest little face when he asks for it and when mommy says no he has a meltdown.
as of this week there is a kindle ban. Monday was tough. Tuesday he only asked once. he's back to listening to books being read at night. i may allow it for maybe an hour a day in a few weeks but that will be it.

as for tv, without it i'd never get ready in the morning! i wish it could be different, but for now disney channel is the one that comes on when you turn on my tv.

TV & iphone addict!

My DD is 16 months and obsessed with my iPhone as well. It's actually getting annoying, so I'm trying not to let her have it too much. She has a complete meltdown when I tell her she can't have it. I thought about the LeapPad, but figure at this age it won't serve it's purpose and by the time it would she'd have lost interest in it.

As for the tv, DH always has to have it on. She really pays no mind to it unless one of her shows is on, and even then she doesn't fully pay attention to it. She's more into the songs on these shows. She does ask for Elmo often so I put the DVD on and let her watch maybe a half hour to an hour a day, but again, she's not sitting still in front of the tv staring at it. she's playing and doing other things and just stopping once in a while for a few minutes to watch.

Re: TV & iphone addict!

My DS is 18 months. I don't let him play with my phone, but I don't have a fancy one like an iphone and there's no good apps on it.

He is a tv addict though. I let him watch in the morning and also at night when I'm cooking. But he asks me to turn it on when it's not and if I change the channel from Disney Jr. he cries. I know there are worse things in the world, but I feel guilty b/c I'm one of those people who likes to have it on all day for noise.

I'm trying to be more conscious of it now and put music on instead or spend more time outside.

We are in the exact same boat - DD is obsessed with TV - every single Disney Junior show. She is also obsessed with the iPhone - at 17 months she can turn it on, unlock it, and click on the app she wants (which of course is the Disney Junior app!). I created a monster. Sadly though, I need the tv to occupy her while I get ready in the morning, so I just let her watch it.

Re: TV & iphone addict!

Having been through this with my son, who is now 4, and seeing that having the TV on hasn't had any negative implications whatsoever, I don't stress about the amount of TV my 15 month old daughter watches. We have the TV on all day and she watches when she wants and plays when she wants. I almost feel like having it on a lot has desensitized her to it so it isn't a big deal when it is on. She seems to enjoy playing with her stacking cups and other manipulative toys more than zoning in front of the TV.

As for the phone/tablet thing, she is obsessed with those as well. My son has a kindle fire and she is always wanting to see it and knows how to swipe the screen. I have an old flip cell phone that I charge up occasionally to let her play with. To me, this is just stuff that they are going to grow up knowing about/how to use. It's a different generation from the one we are used to.

This is exactly what she does also!
At least I'm not alone. It really is a totally different world growing up today!
