I've worked retail.

I've had to leave my family on Thanksgiving night to get to the store by 11pm because doors were opening up at midnight.

It SUCKED.

Did we (me and the other employees) make the best of it and have some fun? Sure.

But it STILL SUCKED to be there and not with my family.

I will NEVER be one of those loons out at midnight waiting behind the door to shop.

This is why I wont shop on Thanksgiving. Its terrible for those who have to work and unfortuantely its usually the low man on the todem pole who has to come in.

Re: Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?

I can't really answer the poll. Not sure that I'm "Disgusted" but I doubt I'll go. I've done Black Friday a few times. It is bad for my health. Hordes of crazy people stress me out so bad!!! We went one time - I think it was Circut City or something like that, and they had a really great deal on a computer so we got on line at like 10-11PM Thanksgiving night (family was all gone home so I really wasn't missing anything - it was DH and I standing in the freezing cold like loons.) Store opened at midnight or 2:00 or something - I can't even remember.

We were like 10th in line and about 10 minutes before they were opening, some a$$holes were coming up directly behind us or trying to get in front and when I said they couldn't cut the line they told me they had been there...in their cars. I was about to lose it - you CAN NOT save your place in line from your car!!

Turned out they were there for the same thing as us and once they let you in it was a madhouse and no one knew where anything was. UGGGGG I can still feel the stress!!!!Chat Icon If we had not gotten what we came for and those guys did, I really would have lost it. After that I don't think we ever did the super early wait in like thing. We've gone shopping a little later on Friday and had some luck.

I can't shop on Thanksgiving. It gets in the way of my traditional Thanksgiving evening plans of sitting in traffic on the Cross Island Parkway.

I don't like to mess with tradition. . . Chat Icon

I don't make my shopping list until after I get my Christmas Tree, so I have no reason to go on Friday, I used to when I was home from college though--but not at the crack of dawn. Usually right before lunch.

I only online shop on Black Friday.

Same. I never enjoyed actually going to the mall, department stores, etc and shopping. I rather be at home in my comfy sweats and shop online.

I mean, c'mon. Thanksgiving is like the one holiday that's impossible to commercialize because there are no gifts! It's just food and family and love and gratitude.

And then there are jackoffs who make their employees sacrifice the pure joy of this day to come in...like my SIL who works for a bunch of douchy lawyers, working from 6am-5pm to make up "vacation time" she used in the 3 days post-Sandy (while there was no power or subway).

The unemployment rate really gives employers license to exploit people in ways that are cruel.

Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?

Thanksgiving is a tradition that this country thrives on. Regardless of your religion, it is a holiday that was united Americans for hundreds of years and throughout the gnereations. It is a time for families to get together and be thankful for what they have. It is one of those sacred holidays where almost all stores are closed and everyone can just enjoy being together. Its the one day where most people can be assured they will have the day off.
Personally, I think opening a (retail) store on Thanksgiving, goes against the grain, of what the holiday represents. It has not so much to do with leaving your families to go shopping, but just against the theory that this is a holiday that brought Americans together for decades. It stood the test of time, it was what America was built on and now because the media tries to push Christmas on us like crazy, there is this need to start the sales earlier and earlier.
I know that there are many families that enjoy the shopping after the eating together and have become a tradition of sorts. I wouldn't take that away from anyone, but that tradition can continue, like it always has, by beginning on early morning Friday. No need to take away from the holiday and what it represents by opening at 8pm the day of.

I will not shop on thanksgiving. No need for it at all, and we are usually home by 7 or 8 but i still won't.

And those who say they are home early or go with family and it doesn't cut into their time with family, what about the workers who have to be there a few hours before the store opens and have to leave their families? I just think it is not necessary to open thanksgiving night before midnight.

Re: Spinoff: Stores open on Thanksgiving-Will YOU shop?

Im working on thanksgiving night. 7pm to 11pm

I won't be shopping. I don't ever 'need' to shop that bad. EVER! I occassionally will shop on black friday but mid day outside the rush hours.

I'm not a fan of thanksgiving. I find the idea of a lot of people sitting around eating to oblivion to celebrate the destruction of a race of people slightly depressing. Sure family time is fun and I'm a Cowboy fan so football is great but the 'reason' for the day isn't my favorite. I treat xmas more like others treat thanksgiving. Its xmas we celebrate family and give thanks.

Our family pretty much tries to ignore the whole theme of thanksgiving with regards to pilgrims and indians. We focus on football and family like we do on Labor Day. Bonus is we get the Friday after off. Generally though my husband works on Black Friday (normal 8-5 job) so its just a one day thing for us.

For me Thanksgiving is just like Columbus day or Labor day. A holiday but not really that big of a deal.

Still, we love to eat and be slobs on Thanksgiving.. and do honor the idea of Fall Harvest.

Never. It's disgusting that retailers are open at all on Thanksgiving.

No one NEEDS to go to Old Navy for a hoodie you can buy online on a national holiday. I respect PC Richard's for always putting the ad in Newsday explaining they remain closed so their employees can enjoy the day with family.

I also avoid Black Friday because I hate crowds and aggravation.

Non-essential stores open on Thanksgiving is a terrible trend that saddens me.

Absolutely not, and I said that I'm disgusted that stores are open. I don't shop on Black Friday either b/c I can't deal with the crowds, and I've been doing all of my Christmas shopping online for years.
