Re: Kids on leashes?

Every child has a different temperment. Believe me, my ds is TOTALLY different from my dd. I have never used a lease on them but before I had them, I also used to think it was horrible. I think it is more horrible to have a kid who disappears in a large crowd at a mall and gets kidnapped. You would feel more guilty for that than putting them on a leash.
Sorry, just my 2 cents.
I guess being a mom changes you and your ideas ALOT.

Re: Kids on leashes?

I am due with my first baby in Sept. I don't *plan* on using one of these, but I'm sure a lot of plans go out the window once you're actually in the situation with a baby. Bottom line for me is, whatever makes you--and your child-- comfortable and SAFE--go for it.

I can't agree with the "child is not an animal" comments. Pack n' Plays (playpens) look an awful lot like animal cages, but I'm still getting one!!

Re: Kids on leashes?

My gut reaction is NO, I would never use one with my children. However, I know that my views might change once I have children.

My dad always told me that my uncle was so wild as a kid that he would constantly run out of the yard into the street, so my grandmother kept him on a really long leash tied to the tree. He could get around the entire yard, but couldn't get out of it. Today, someone would probably say she was being abusive!

My grandmother always tells me the same thing. they measured out a rope from a tree to the street and would attach it to my uncles. I always thought it was weird, but she said there was no fence and they always wanted to be outside.

Re: Kids on leashes?

I don't have kids...but I do have a dog, who I love like my child-and he would never run away, NEVER-he's well trained, and he stays right by my side....he's on a leash, because sometimes a car comes by too close, or another dog runs up, and it's hard to grab him fast without hurting him, the leash won't hurt him....
I think that, in this day and age when parents can't discipline thier kids without people butting in to tell them they are being too harsh, a parent might prefer to pull back on the nylon, rather than grab their arms if they are trying to go somewhere they shouldn't. Kids won't always hold your hand, or stay in a stroller-and sometimes, even the greatest kid can have a kicking, screaming temper tantrum when they want to touch, grab, go to something that they aren't suppose to...JMO.

Re: Kids on leashes?

I read an article on young childrens' weight issues. Doctors are advising that children are in the stroller at too late an age. They should be walking around getting a ton of exercise. I think the harness allows for that to happen.

Re: Kids on leashes?

I live in Long Beach and ride my bike on the boardwalk everyday. Toddlers are ALWAYS running into the bike lanes and there are a lot of near misses where both the child and the bicyclist could get severely injured. Sometimes it obvious that these parents are oblivious and not even paying attention to where their child is runningChat Icon other times there are not enough free hands.
I was CURSED OUT by a mother in front of her children yesterday (nice role model) because her child ran directly in front of my bike in the bike lane - yeah, that's MY fault.Chat Icon Depending on the situation, I do not think that the leashes are a bad idea. I would rather someone disapprove of my using it for a moment if it keeps my child, or someone else, from getting hurt.

I think everyone tries to blame kids being overweight and everything but parents buying crap for them to eat (lets remember the 5 year old doesnt have a job to buy McDonalds,Chips and Soda on their own) and throwing them in front of a TV for hours to play video games and watch TV instead of sending them out to play with their friends like we did as children!

Re: Kids on leashes?

I have never used them but I think its a GREAT idea!!
Im shaking my head in amazememt at the ppl that are saying " my children are human not dogs"..
These " leashes" arent around there freaking throats..isnt the most important thing a childs safety?
Think of all the abductions in malls and such that would of been prevented if the child was in a harness..
As good as a child is, it doesnt matter if a crazy phycho wants to take them. There is no mom in the world that hasnt turned there back for ONE second even by accident.

Re: Kids on leashes?

NO !! they are not animals. Sometimes even though I am being pulled in two different directiosn I wonder if it would have been good when they were smaller especially since one ofine has a thing of just walking off which is not good.

Re: Kids on leashes?

While I know they are great for safety reasons, I don't think I'll be able to put one on my child. I get a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach when I see parents using them on their children.
My mother put one on me once when we went to the mall. I was in no way an out of control child and I NEVER ran away from her and while she was just using it to be cautious, I still remember clear as day how ashamed I felt to be on a "leash", like I was a disobedient kid. I think that's perhaps why I get that feeling when I see children wearing them now.

Let me tell you, you can literally BLINK and your child does something they shouldn't. The best parents have it happen to them. Once you have 2 kids, it is VERY hard to watch both at the same time. I have no clue how people with more than 2 do it sometimes!
