Kids on leashes?

The past few weeks, I have seen a whole LOT of kids on leashed/harnesses in my neighborhood. It struck me as a little odd, but it's better than having toddlers run out into the street.

Re: Kids on leashes?

I think that in some cases is beneficial especially if its a kid that is out of control.

Re: Kids on leashes?

Honestly, I hate seeing kids with these things. Maybe there are some extreme cases that they might be helpful for, otherwise...damn, hold your childs hand or put him/her in a stroller!!!

Re: Kids on leashes?

I think safety of a child comes first so i guess if it works in situations then so be it. But i haven't seen anyone use it yet.

Re: Kids on leashes?

Not a big fan...but I suppose there are some cases where it's beneficial. I saw a program similar to Nanny 911 (but with a child psychologist instead of Nanny) and this woman was on her own with triplet toddlers. She didn't have much choice.

But they remind me of Mike Meyers being tied to the monkey bars on SNL! Chat Icon

Re: Kids on leashes?

I will use one when we have kids. Especially in places like the mall. Atleast then the kid is out of the stroller and walking around.

Re: Kids on leashes?

Totally a safety issue. Its not as simple as saying hold your kids hand or put them in a stroller. There may be a moment you need to have something else in your hands other than your childs hand or your kid may not be the type to stay in a stroller.

My mom insisted we buy one for Emma when I took her to Disney when she was 18 months. I refused to put it on her but when my mom (56) took her on for an hour she had it on her. My 18 month old could RUN and she didnt listen to you telling her to come back... she was 1!!! I personally carried her in a sling. Now when Emma finds the harness she wants us to put it on her and jerk her backwards so she falls down. Actually very amusing.Chat Icon

Re: Kids on leashes?

Well, I never used one on my son. I can't say that I never will but I don't plan to. I suppose if the kid is out of control and won't give you their hand then you have no choice, safety comes first!

Re: Kids on leashes?

I swore up & down I would NEVER ever use these. Sure enough I bought one. When you are in the city or the mall it's good to have.

Though I don't think we ever used it. It was a just in case.

Re: Kids on leashes?

When I was little (back in the 70's) my mom put me one of those harnesses. It zipped in the back and had a long strap/handle type thing on the back.

Lately I've seen kids and parents wearing things on their wrists attached to a long phone-cord. Those look like leashes and the kids seemed to be dragged around.

The might not look pretty, but if it keeps them safe.....

Re: Kids on leashes?

I think the majority of the people who say they will never use them, don't have kids. I have not used them for mychildren but can definately see why people do.

Re: Kids on leashes?

I would never ever use them. EVER. I agree with the comment that they're children, not animals.

My mother had 5 kids (3 within 2.5 years) and never had the need for them. I have 8 nieces and nephews and they've all gotten along fine without them as well so I don't think it's a matter of "you don't have kids so you don't know." JMO.

I agree with you. My SIL has 4 kids. The oldest are 13 Chat Icon 10 and 3. Ive know the 13 years since they were 3 and the 10 year old since she was 6 months. We did lots of babysitting. We use to take them out to the mall and movies so that his sister could have a break (even though she never wanted a break) and they always LISTENED! they always stayed with us!

Re: Kids on leashes?

I think they're horrible to just look at a child on a leash, but when I see parents with kids at disney or someplace crowded, you realize how beneficial it is, especially if you have multiple kids, one chid cna distract you and the other one can RUN. And Disney World is safe, just imagine if it happenned in a street or a mall

I have kids...2 of them. They are humans, not animals and it is my belief that they should not be put on leashes....again, just MY belief.

That's great that you know people who never needed them. You just don't know how YOUR kids will be. Believe me, I never thought I would have a child like my daughter. She is wonderful but a HANDFUL, still at 7!! Don't judge until you are in this situation.
