Are you planning to vaccinate?

I followed the vaccine schedule from the Vaccine Book w/ DD, and will do the same w/ this baby. The only vaccine I delayed, was MMR until 3, b/c my ped's office does not separate the M/M & R.

I'm not trying to start any drama. I'm just seriously unsure about vaccinations and my family members in the medical field feel the same. I don't understand why kids need 6 shots in one visit. I'm prone to allergic reactions and if my baby has one I want to know what caused it. That being said I'm trying to research the pros and cons of each shot. Another thing I'm researching is hospitals putting silver nitrate in children's eyes. Several websites I read said they do at birth and that is something I'm 100% against. I don't see a positive there.

Are you in NY? At our hospital orientation, they said a Vitamin K shot and eye antibiotic are mandatory in NY state. I don't know what type of antibiotic it is.

we were never offered 6 vaccines in 1 visit. Most, 2 vaccines and an oral. Antibiotic gel is applied to all newborn eyes to prevent infection (csection or vaginal delivery). Its precautionary.

Are you planning to vaccinate?

This is such a personal decision these days. With that said, I have pretty much kept up with DS' vaccine schedule. I refused the hep b shot at the hospital bc I thought it was crazy to give him a shot after the trauma of being born. He got the shot at his 2 week or 1 month appt, I can't remember for sure. After that he was given one shot at a time until I saw that he was able to handle it and then we tried 2 shots, I have NEVER and will NEVER give more than 2 shots at once, mainly bc if he gets a reaction it's easier to narrow it down to 2 instead of a bunch of shots.

I will be following the same routine with DC#2 and pray this baby reacts just as well as his/her big brother.

Yes, without a doubt. I think its selfish and harmful for a mother to put their child in danger by not vaccinating them.

I disagree with your opinion. I think there are people with legitimate reasons for delaying. I don't think anyone on these boards can tell me why an hours old baby needs a hep b vaccine at the hospital if it does not have any risk factors for same.

Just FYI: babies get vaccinated for hep B at birth because god forbid you get into a car accident, or some other awful thing happens, and baby needs blood products they could potentially get hepatitis from a blood transfusion and this would be an awful/life altering disease for an infant to get.

It's an erythromycin ointment, same as if the baby got pink eye, they don't do silver nitrate anymore, and yes, both are mandatory in NYS

An hours old baby does NOT need the hep b vaccine, which is why you can refuse to have the hospital administer it and have your ped do it. Thats what I did with DD and DS and will do it with this LO as well.

I did the same thing. When I asked what the hep b vaccine was for, the ped told me if there is a chance the mother does not know she has hep b (doesn't receive prenatal care) by giving the vaccine at birth, it can help prevent the baby from possibly contracting it. I opted to wait for dd to get it.

when I had my DD my ped told me to NOT let the hospital give baby a hep B . He said he would do it in the offive later on so we did just that. He / we r doing the same for this baby.

Re: Are you planning to vaccinate?

With DD we did everything on schedule, with this baby we might delay or seperate few shots, I'll have to ask my ped and see what he says and what he can do ( I know he was ok with it when DD was little, but then we ended up going overseas so she had to get them all so we could travel) but most we'll get on schedule.

Re: Are you planning to vaccinate?

Yes!! The possibility of my child contracting a deadly disease that could have been prevented far outweighs the very low chance of side effects. Besides, there are so many more cases of measles and whooping cough going around the school from the kids who weren't vaccinated.

As for the hep b vaccine, its your choice to get it in the hospital or not. Honestly, my ped said it really doesn't matter whether you get it there or at the ped's office later when you need it. They OFFER it to you in the hospital because there are so many people out there who don't do follow up appointments and dont get to see a doctor reguraly.

Re: Are you planning to vaccinate?

DS #1 has some, DS#2 has none and I will not be vaccinating #3. This is the best decision for MY children. I believe I would be doing more harm than good vaccinating them. (I won't get into the many reasons but our genetic make up has some bearing on it) DH and I did our research and are fully aware of the pros and cons and are 100% comfortable with our decision. I do not condemn parents who choose to vaccinate their children or question their decision. I do not put my beliefs ahead of anyone else that chooses to vaccinate their child. I find it very arrogant that people who vaccinate condemn parents who don't. I believe we ALL make educated decisions and we should ALL respect each other's decisions as parents. We love our babies more than anythig and have their best interest in mind when making such decisions.

Re: Are you planning to vaccinate?

Sometimes these threads get out of hand with all of the opinions thrown at one another. But some of you have just opened my eyes to somethings I knew nothing about and for that I thank each of you.

I have never had the Hep B vaccine and so I'm unsure why my baby would need it. As a result, I will have to do some additional research. However, the silver nitrate is a new thing for me. If I were to deliver at home with a Midwife this wouldn't even be an issue, correct?

More and more I'm thinking that hospital deliver is not really for me. I've recently read on one thread that the pitocin used to induce birth may be linked to autism and has high levels of mercury.

Ladies please keep the information flowing...I will try to ignore the opinions and stick to the facts.

Have a great on all!
