If its an accredited college there is no reason why it wouldnt be the same... My Dipoloma doesnt say ONLINE COLLEGE, it says Ashford University and Bachelor of Science...
I have been looking into online colleges as well; How did you like Ashford's program? Difficult.. on the easier side? How long did you BA take?

I graduated 2 years ago so im sure a lot has changed. I loved the set up. 5 weeks per class. Like i said i dont know if anything has changed but its unlikely that the class set up has...
My Major was Psychology and my Minor was Criminal Justice. I started in May of 2006 and graduated in April of 2010. I only had 15 credits to start from Queensboro. My friend also got her Masters from Ashford and she liked it a lot as well.

As for a State college is considered less than an Ivy League school, they are absolutely considered "less". Are they as good of an education? I don't know. Some schools are more difficult to get into, require higher SATs, better grades, more well-rounded, community service. A better degree doesn't guarantee a job but it opens more doors. Depending on the industry (particularly finance) that matters. It doesn't mean someone is going to be a more valuable employee. I know a guy from Dartmouth that uses the word Dartmouth multiple times during conversations. He may have the degree but he's a pretentious snob.
This is so silly. Have you ever taken an online course?
I watched a documentary on this College, Inc documentary info and it went over how most online universities are for-profit, so they have the incentive to admit any and everyone because they care more about their bottom line than reputation. At best they are money-making machines, pumping out degrees to all those willing to pay... at worst, they are deceptive manipulative enterprises attempting to lure people into a better career by accumulating tons of student loans with no guarantee of a better future.
Are there brick-and-mortar Universities that offer online classes/options that are legit? Sure. But I would be skeptical of pure online Universities, accredited or not. (the documentary went into how they buy accreditation from struggling universities that have it.)

I am an adjunct professor at well recognized school that offers both on-line degrees and traditional in-person degrees. I taught both sides. In my opinion and experience, an individual learns more from a degree that was not acquired on-line.
In my full-time job, I have some decision making power regarding hires and promotions. When I see a degree taht was acquried on-line school I give it less weight than a degree that was aquired the traditional way. I explain my take to anyone else in the decision making area as well.
So yes, it does make a difference a differnece in my world.
I know two professors that have told me the same. In fact one says he does not give any weight to an online degree. There is so much competition now.

I'm not sure that an online degree in teaching is the way to go. I don't know anyone in my district with one.
I think SUNY is well respected in the education world.

Also, while considering going this route, you may also want to take into consideration that teaching jobs on LI are very scarce right now, both in public and private schools.

ITA with this! Find a reputable brick & mortar university that offers distance learning. I did this for my Masters... main reason being no schools in NY offer the specialized degree. It is definitely NOT looked down upon in my industry. The director of the program is a very well known highly respected scientist in my industry. The content and courses were very in depth and work was difficult. However, it also depends on the degree.... something like Teaching seems strange to do online.

Teaching jobs in many parts of the country are scarce right now... layoffs will continue for at least the next few years. There are about 5-6 years of grads, many of whom, are still subbing or teaching in leave replacement positions. There are teachers, some with 15+ years experience getting laid off.
The population of LI is declining... many districts will not replace retirees and will continue to lay off.
If there is a position, administrators have their pick from hundreds, sometimes thousands of resumes. In light of the above, some admins. will only interview and hire candidates from certain colleges/universities. For example, my district has only hired graduates of one particular university for my dept.
To be perfectly honest and I hope this doesn't come across as being harsh (I've been in education for almost 20 years on LI)... given all of the above, and how competitive it is out there, I can honestly tell you, I do not know one administrator who is even going to give a second look to a resume that lists an on-line degree.
I'm going to give you the same advice I'd give my best friend... a degree from an on-line university will costs you $$$$$, therefore, a lot more college debt, and more difficulty getting a job in any field. Secondly, teaching is effectively closed field for at least the next decade as layoffs continue and the population decreases. I would pursue a traditional degree in a field that will grow domestically over the next several decades.

Agreed, esp in the humanities. Though I know math, science, and other "high need" fields also struggling.
Keep in mind that a lot of job hunting (and getting an offer) is through networking. An online degree takes this out of the equation entirely, because you will not have classmates in the traditional sense. Your professors will not be local teachers/admins that can recommend you for vacancies.
An online degree can be great, but not in the education field IMO.

The coursework and testing is typically set-up in a much different fashion compared to the way a typical college course is. In many ways they are more difficult. In a typical class the professor lectures, a handful of students participate, there is a paper or two to write or other homework assignment and some tests. In most online courses I have taken, there are multiple discussion questions weekly that you must participate in, a 5-10 page paper weekly and other various assignments. There are no multiple choice tests. I learned more and worked harder in my online courses because the requirements and structure were more intense. Yes you work at your own pace but you do not work less, if anything you typically work more.
As for the statement that a private school is worth more then a state school, did you ever think maybe the student couldn't afford or didn't want to shell out the cash for the more expensive school. You may find this link to newsday showing the college information on LI's valedictorian's and the colleges they are attending interesting. No I haven't taken an online course. I know someone who has her 4.0 average who tells everyone how easy it is because she can sit there & google the answers. So maybe where you took your online course, they had stricter guidelines & more work. Certainly not every online degree is the same - just like not every college is the same.
Whether a terrific student can afford a state school or a private school wasn't the point of this question. It was about how they were perceived. As I said a degree from a private (or Ivy League) doesn't guarantee a terrific employee but anyone who said a degree from one school isn't taken seriously as another is being foolish.

I won't comment on the value of an online degree, because I work for a company that owns an online university and did my MBA online.
What I will mention though is that online education is not cheaper than on-site education, so do think about why you want to go online. It's not for everyone, but for some people it's a great option.
In my MBA program, there was no way you could google answers as the questions were situations, not just straight answers. You really had to think about the case studies and answer appropriately.

Excellent point! I was looking into pre-reqs at a very popular online program and it cost 40% MORE than SCC for the course AND 4 Universities told me it would NOT be transferable later
