Heparin users HELP......ouch!

I was on Lovenox for a good part of my last pregnancy and for this whole pregnancy (minus the first 10 weeks) and just switched to Heparin and I am in pain. My stomach is so so sore. I'm bruising too.....I haven't had any pain at all with Lovenox except last pregnancy when I got a couple of those little balls under my skin, but I am bruised and hurting from the heparin. What am I doing wrong? How can I fix it? The needle is slightly bigger, but it doesn't hurt doing it, it hurts later. Is there another place I can do it? Washing the dishes hurts like hell because the counter hits me right where i do the injections. Help me please!!!!

Heparin users HELP......ouch!

It says 3ml, which I know is the volume. Other than that it says 25G x 5/8 (0.5mm x 16mm)

Thats why. 25 g is pretty thick. My new pharmacy actually sent me 25g at first and i called them back and requested 27s, whcih is what i was using all along. I couldnt imagine using 25s! Ask for smaller ones! Are you doing 5000 units? If so, the ones i use are 1ml, 27g x1/2.

Oh really? Ok, thanks. I may have to try a different pharmacy because CVS was initially going to give me something thicker and said these were smaller. (Yes 5000 units) I didn't think that was the problem since it doesn't hurt going in. Thanks for your help!

Re: Heparin users HELP......ouch!

I would ask for a smaller needle ~ I have a smaller needle (smaller then the Lovenox needle) and I haven't had any bruising or even those little balls under the skin. Although I have been a little itchy after I take it.

Mine says: Short needle
8 MM length
31G Gauge

good luck!

I was on it for the last few weeks of my pregnancy. I was told you can use the entire belly area from hip to hip but no lower than the belly button. It was a bit more painful than the Lovenox. Have you tried icing the area first? I never did, but many people suggest that.

Re: Heparin users HELP......ouch!

I had the same thing happen to me. I dont know why cause I was doing the same thing only I was injecting more on the sides then in the belly area. I tried to massage the area after to see if that helped but it really didnt do anything for me. After I gave birth i still have that area being more black and blue and lumpy. The only good thing is that 1- its going away 2- lovenox for 3 more weeks and then Im done.

Sorry I dont have any advice. I dont know if you can use Ice if that does anything to the medicine.

Re: Heparin users HELP......ouch!

I can't remeber what size my needles were cause I was only on it a week and then gave birth early.

I would tend to trust Cate on it since she is the expert Heparin person!!!!!! I think she has probably been on it the most!

Alli before you generously donated it to me, you were using the insulin needles which are 28g i think. Those were my favorite. To the OP, when i had my first heparin mishap in DR almost a year ago, they gave me around 24g and i was a bruised bloody mess. Going up in size should help.

Re: Heparin users HELP......ouch!

Sorry to crash, but I wanted to know if this was normal. I just started Heparin today (37 weeks). Right after I injected I turned around to get a drink and I got extremely nauseous and dizzy. I had to sit down right away and had DH get me water. Everything got blurry and sounded muffled like I was about to pass out. I've been eating normally and drinking water and have been in the ac all day so there's no reason why this would happen. Did anyone feel like that?

were you nervous to give yourself the shot? It sounds like your endorphins went crazy after the shot. That never happened to me after a shot but I did get dizzy and things when I was pregnant. Maybe it was just that and not related. If it happens again I would call your doctor.
