BBT charting

I am back to charting again now that my 11 month old DS stopped nursing and I finally got AF. How strict do I have to be about not moving while taking my temperature? Also, I wake up numerous times in the night to readjust DS in his crib or get him to go back to sleep. Will this effect my BBT in the morning? We're just using charting as a natural birth control right now, but still want to be accurate. TIA

Re: BBT charting

I'm not sure of the exact answer, I know I was never successful at it because I used to wake up at all hours of the night! Maybe try asking on the TTC board!

Don't move when you wake up. I kept my therm on the nightstand next to my bed; all I moved was my arm.

Getting up multiple times will affect your temp. For best results, I think you're supposed to sleep for three consecutive hours or more.

This is all correct. I only ever charted to TTC so I wasn't overly concerned with being consistent. I was up several times a night becuase DD still wasn't STTN and I'd rarely get the 3 consecutive hours of sleep you're supposed to. My temps would fluctuate a bit but it was still very obvious when I had my temp shift after ovulation. I don't think I'd be comfortable being so lax about it if I was using it as birth control. I know they have NFP classes you can take which are supposed to be very helpful. Good luck! I know this method is said to be as effective as the pill if done correctly.

eta- I would also highly recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It's SUPER helpful with charting to prevent and conceive, as well as understanding your body and cycle. I found it to be easy reading, it's not just a boring text book.
