BTDT Ques - traveling with a NB

Hey BTDT moms...did any of you travel when your LO was 3 months old or so? DH wants to go to Arizona (4 hour plane ride from me) when Chat Icon is about 3 months. It is his dad's 60th bday and he thinks it will be easy to travel with the baby when s/he is still so little and sleepy.

I am just hestitant to book anything until 1) we have the baby and 2) we know what we are dealing with, "nice and calm" or "colicky and crazy" 3) I am also worried about traveling in January and flu season. 4) I hate that there is a time change and dealing with feedings and throwing my whole schedule off!

Should I stick with my gut and wait till baby is born before we book anything or can it all together? He REALLY wants to go and also to take advantage of good flight prices and book soon. I guess we can always book and cancel if things don't work out the way we planned. Rather than get stuck with some astronomical price if we wait. I just dont want to get people's hopes up though.

I took my DS to FL at 4 months. He was so easy. I was scared because he was colicky and I figured he would cry the entire time.

We booked an early am flight because he was always better early in the day. Gave him a bottle at take off and he slept until we started the decent. We then gave him another bottle then.

Way home was almost the same. But we flew in the afternoon and were delayed a bit. He slept the entire flight home

People commented on how good he was.

That trip was actually the turning point. He started sleeping better at night and just overall seemed to be happier

I think it is easier to travel when they are real little compared to when they want to get up and move arpund

For us it was so easy to travel with DD at that age! I nursed DD on take off and landing when we flew to Texas. She nursed basically the whole flight home too, off and on.

3 m is usually a great age to travel! You have to go with your comfort level -- maybe see if you can book on southwest air or something since they let you change/cancel without penalty? But by 3 m, the baby is usually sleeping a little longer overnight, but is extremely portable. You basically take the baby in their car seat and snap n go to the airport and you can check everything at the gate for free. You can also check either a pack n play or other bassinet for free (we did this with our rock n play and it was fabulous!!). If you need any travel supplies help, LMK!

Does it depend on what your pediatrician says? My new peditrician has me paranoid to go anywhere that my baby can get sick.

Im sure that she would tell me no planes. LOL I hope Im not going to be a nervous nelly parent....

Waiting until the baby is born might not help you - my DD's sleep routine changed every few weeks in the beginning. For us, 3-4 months old was Sleepless Hell. But not all babies are like that, and it will be easier to travel with a 3 month old than with a toddler. Do you think your BF? If you do, that'll help protect the baby from getting sick. Buy a baby carrier and wear them onto the plane; it'll keep strangers and their germs from getting too close.

My ILs were in Phoenix for years, and the weather in AZ is lovely. If you choose to go, have fun and enjoy!!

Thx girls. All good advice and I need to bookmark this! OK and yes I plan to nurse. That is another paranoia, nursing while on a plane oye.

But anyway I guess it also depends on baby's shots. I remember my sister traveled when her baby was 2 months old and the ped was hesitant bc she didnt have some important shots yet. Hmm that is food for thought.

The shots don't protect them from the everyday stuff that they're most likely to encounter: colds, coughs, fevers, etc. (If they get a fever under 8 weeks old, that could be bad - maybe that's why your sister's ped was worried?)

Nursing on a plane actually seems super easy. Throw a cover over yourself if you're self-concious. Since it's a plane, you won't have tons of people walking past you seeing what you're doing. It's an simple way to keep the baby happy and quiet on the plane. Chat Icon
