how to paint front doors..

do i have to actually remove the front doors to paint them? has anyone successfully painted them while they well still in the door frame? i have double doors and i think it would be a MAJOR pain to take them down. would LOVE to paint them a brick red.

TIA!

i dont see why you'd have to remove them, i think you would just need to paint them while they are open so you can get everywhere.

Re: how to paint front doors..

You can definitely paint them while they are still hung. Just keep the door open while you're painting, and don't close it for a couple of hours, or until the directions say it should be dry.

I always take down doors to paint them, but that's because I want to get the bottoms done well, and around the hinges without getting any on the actual hinges. If you're careful, it won't be an issue, though.

When I painted our door I left it hung. Just do it on a dry day and keep it open for hours so it dries.

Re: how to paint front doors..

I guess it depends if you stain or paint. My DH had to take ours down to sand it down and stain it a wood color.

But if you paint you shouldn't have to take it down.

Re: how to paint front doors..

This may be crazy, but I just had my front doors painted at an auto body shop. Using car paint is the best way to stand up to the elements. I posted a picture of it on this board. I used "Ford Thunderbird blue" lol
I rented a flatbed truck at home depot (inexpensive) to transport the door. Good luck.

Re: how to paint front doors..

I painted my steel door after it was in the frame. It was a new door and I went to the paint store and I asked for advice. I got a primer (I think rusteleom?) and then a darker color. It needed 3 full coats.

As for the mess, I just used a drop cloth.

The only drawback is that it gets hot!! The door is almost scary hot.

I also got some really little paintbrushes for the small areas. The artist kinds but cheap.

ETA: I have heard of getting a door painted at the car shop. It is the best way to do it.

Wood or metal door? Car paint doesn't usually flex that much, compared to traditional latex paint. Wood doors flex, swell, and shrink based on temperature and humidity. If they put a flex agent in it, it would probably work, but straight auto paint on a wood door might not actually last that long.
I'm guessing that if it was a shop, they would take that into consideration when painting the doors, though.

Good point! My door was fiberglass. The car paint is only good for fiberglass or steel doors, not wood for all the reasons you stated above.
